This is what I believe and you don't need formal religion to believe and practice it.
There are lots of people of genuine spiritual depth who do not attend an institutional organization like church, temple, or synagogue.

Wrong! The Holy Spirit is the connection! I had an Epiphany of the Holy Spirit long before I read a Bible,and without a bit of religious training

As Hegel said, believe what you want in private. If you present it publicly as a doctrine, it will be debated as to its truth.
I think there are actually very few people who genuinely believe nothing is real but atomic matter and energy, that morality and values are purely subjective, and that there is no real purpose and meaning out there other than what we arbitrarily construct in our brains.

I've noticed that those who claim a "personal relationship with Jesus" tend to be politically outspoken and active, trying to insert (for example) "creationism" into public school science classes and "Bible studies" as part of the history/social studies curriculum.
That's because they have a microphone! I have completely gave up on the Secular Political system!
Lots don't really listen to the Holy Spirit ,because they are wrapped up in the Secular world. And they translate the Bible how they want.
I read the Bible once around '76 !
BUT since Nov 1 1975 Midnight through today ,I have studied exclusively under the Holy Spirit! That's the difference between being "religious" and being in Theology.
And I don't identify with any denomination or organized religion.
Not,Christianity, not Islam , even though I believe Jesus is YHWH in physical form. I believe Allah is YHWH .
I learn a lesson from Charlie Kirk, who was a real Holy Spirit filled believer, but he tried to be extremely Spiritual and Political at the same time! That's not sustainable!
Oh you can be big in organized religion and politics, but that's not remotely the same thing!
Lately I have gone completely NATIVE! It's as if I have to finish my work , that was rudely interrupted on Oct 5 1813!

The university was an invention of the Catholic church.
All of America's colonial universities were founded by Protestants.
Those universities taught a classical education. That's why our founding fathers were so erudite.
18th century America was the most literate place on the planet. Why? Because Protestants are expected to become literate and be able to read their bibles.
Science was utterly unique to the West and is definitely an outgrowth of the Christian belief that God's revelation is not only found in scripture, but also in nature's revelation.
There is no question there is a strain of American Protestant fundamentalism that can said to be promoting ignorance.

My man, please look into the educational/intellectual history of Iran & Iraq.
The Islamic Near East would be considered part of the western legacy. It's not an Eastern civilization.
That was a case where religion did shut down rational inquiry and empirical investigation.
The Islamic Golden Age was a grand achievement for sure, but it lasted only for a few centuries, before religious dogma largely shut it down.
