A lot of supposedly Democrats these days call themselves Democratic Socialists, and are really members of the Democratic Socialists of America.
So, what is it?
Looking into this, what it boils down to is that these are actually Communists who have repackaged the brand.
Capitalism is a system designed by the owning class to exploit the rest of us for their own profit. We must replace it with democratic socialism, a system where ordinary people have a real voice in our workplaces, neighborhoods, and society.
Democratic socialists believe that both the economy and society should be run democratically—to meet public needs, not to make profits for a few.

Rephrased, that is classic Marx in that it says "the owning class"--aka Oligarchs and such--"exploit the rest of us..."--that is the "proletariat." The words have changed, but the meaning remains the same: Classic Communist class warfare didactic.
They then state they must replace this with what amounts to worker's collectives, again rephrased to make it sound better.
So, unlike this article claims:
Most notably, President Trump has frequently and falsely criticized Mamdani as a communist in the lead-up to the election. Mamdani refuted that characterization in a June appearance on NBC's Meet the Press, to which he responded, "I am not."
Yes, Mamdani is a Communist. He wants wealth redistribution at the hands of an autocracy.
Then there's this:
"We want to collectively own the key economic drivers that dominate our lives, such as energy production and transportation," reads the DSA's website.
That is straight up Marxist Communism in every bit of its classic form. Collectivization is pure Communism.
So, when somebody says they are a Democratic Socialist, call them what they really are: A Communist.
