Venezuela was Democratic Socialism in action. Chavez won an election. He immediately started socializing the economy. Taking over the oil industry, he--as happened in Mexico a century earlier doing the same thing--kicked the big corporations out and the state took control. The energy corporations responded by pulling all their people out of the country leaving Venezuela with no technical knowledge or supply line for maintenance parts. Soon, production fell to a low.
Then, as the money ran out from confiscating the wealth of the Rich, everything else became scarce. Grocery stores started rationing and bread lines formed.
Chavez, then Maduro increasingly rigged elections. As more sectors of the economy failed, the state stepped in and took them over. Nothing improved. The Bolivar became nearly worthless. Corruption and graft permeated the government then the economy. It took about a decade for that to happen instead of immediately as with actual Communism, but it happened.
Democratic Socialism leads to the same ruin as Communism, just slower.
