Justice Amy Coney Barrett went before Congress recently to ask for an additional $14 million in security funding for court employees. She told a personal story about struggling to explain to her 12-year-old son about why mommy had to wear a bulletproof vest to work.
She should have told her son that, when state officials pass sensible gun control laws, she votes to overturn them. She should have told him that, in Wolford v. Lopez, she struck down a law which would have required people to get permission from a property owner before bringing a loaded weapon into a hotel or restaurant. She should have told him that, in Kanter v. Barr, she voted to uphold the rights of some convicted felons to keep their guns.
She should have told him that gun violence is the number one cause of death for children in America, but the courts don’t seem to take that under consideration when they make their rulings.
She should have told him that mommy was going to be just fine because the taxpayers were going to pay lots of money to keep her safe from the gun-violence she enables from her position on the Supreme Court.
