No. Most people on the left do not want prisons abolished. “Leftists” is a broad, imprecise label covering mainstream liberals/Democrats, progressives, social democrats, socialists, anarchists, and others. Support for full prison abolition is a minority position concentrated among radical activists, some academics, and specific organizations on the far left.

Where the idea actually comes from

Prison abolition is a real current within radical left thought. It draws on figures such as Angela Davis, organizations like Critical Resistance, and strands of anarchism and Marxist analysis that view prisons as tools of racial and class control rather than primarily as responses to crime. Proponents typically argue for replacing the entire carceral system with “transformative justice,” community accountability processes, social services, and economic redistribution. Some extend this to police and border abolition as well. This view is visible in certain activist spaces, academic writing, and niche progressive outlets, especially after the 2020 protests.

Of course, Leftists don't want prisons abolished. Instead, they want a different class of people imprisoned. Instead of vicious, violent thugs, rapists, and murderers, they want their political enemies and those that don't believe in their insane political and economic ideas to be. Every radical Leftist government ever has done exactly that.

You did not hit the profit motive. The prison industry has no trouble keeping people on jail to increase profits. ICE is paying MEGA millions to build jails that would allow them to squeeze more money out of the Treasury.

ICE prefers deportation rather than building more prisons to house illegal lawbreakers. I support ICE.

Where did I say that? Are you on drugs?
You implied it. You want rioters whose political views you disagree with locked up. You want "child molesters" (by which I inferred you mean Trump given your other posts) locked up. That implies you want political trials followed by locking up people you disagree with politically.

On the other hand, you give drug dealers and criminals like shoplifters a free pass.

I did nothing of the sort. You seem to have a guilty conscience.

Exactly who the democrats are pushing to get elected. And they are succeeding.
