Nuking Japan had nothing to do with Japan.....that was the story that America told but the real reason was a combination of wanting to get some use out of this new weapon that into which a lot of work was placed, and wanting the world to fear us.

Japan was actually trying to surrender at the time.

Americans would rather have nuked Japan into a quick surrender than risk American lives in a bloody invasion of the Japanese home islands.

The polls I gave you showed that in 1965 the overwhelming majority of Americans approved of deploying the US army to beat down the commies in Vietnam.

Trump would have never started a Middle Eastern war if he wasn't supremely confident that you MAGA cultists were Neocons at heart and would massively support a war with Iran.

That was because in 1965 the majority of Americans believed the uprising in Vietnam was about communism when it was about Vietnam for the Vietnamese, about patriotism. The average Viet Cong didn’t know the first thing about communism but he was committed to the war for his country.

Yes you're right, once any constituency to 'fight the commies' evaporated by about 1968 or 1969, the US government started looking for an off-ramp.

Truman spent a fortune making a weapon. He had to justify the expense. As cruel as bombing cities with nukes was, not doing it would have put the govt in an ugly position. The military also wanted to see what the weapon would do in real war use. It showed the world who was the most powerful nation.

True. But otoh Johnson did resign because he had lost his constituency, largely because of Vietnam. Nixon, recognizing the public mood, campaigned in 1968 on the claim he had a secret plan to get us out of Vietnam

Obviously Nixon lied. But he eventually basically surrendered to the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese in Paris

No one here has "sources" that is anything other than the handful of media choices they make and perhaps some other 'forum people', 'podcaster' they speak with or listen to. NONE of them are getting some high level insider information from people in the know of things that are not out in public for all to see.

Trump has made it really hard on his most rabid supporters as he often is the one who changes positions day to day making everything his defenders said yesterday wrong.
