I mean the Republican base had choices of reasonably intelligent, experienced, seasoned candidates besides George Dumbya Bush and Donald Trump. But something about Republican voters draws them to the stupid and poorly-prepared!
This is why Trump ran as a Republican.
The Donald is clearly a major step down from GW.
Reagan was once asked about what was needed to be a good President. He answered, surround yourself with good people. When SecState Alexander Haig became too controversial, Reagan asked him to resign for the good of the nation. When AG Alberto Gonzales became too controversial, GW stood by him out of loyalty to a friend, but to the detriment of the nation. Trump only cares about himself and fires people by Tweet.
In one case, we had a President who put the nation first. In another case, a President who put personal loyalty to friends above the best interests of the nation. In the last case, a President who puts his wealth and power above all other things.
I prefer a President who puts the interests of the nation first. It's a matter of duty and adhering to their oath of office.

An excellent question. Given how the main campaign strategy of the Republican Party is fear-mongering and the fact it works so well on the MAGA base tells me that fear is the basis of why MAGAs vote for people like Trump.
Fear can be conquered with education and/or exposure to one's fears. Most of the things being fear-mongered are fear of the future such as "whites will become a minority in America" or "illegals will take your minimum wage job". Never mind that as our nation becomes more blended, races are disappearing or that the American Dream is to have a job that pays better than minimum wage.
As most intelligent, educated and rational people have already surmised, MAGAts ain't too bright. There's a reason why Trump prefers the poorly educated; they are more gullible and easier the manipulate as JPP proves daily.
My observation is that MAGAs don't really give a shit about economic policy or foreign policy.
Their votes are completely based on how they feel about blacks, transgenders, immigrants, Hispanics, gays.

Very soon. Food prices are going down. Fuel prices are artificially up.

One thing I've noticed overs the years, many presidents' financial policies bleed into and are generally realized during the next 1-2 presidents' terms.
These things take time to manifest.
Trump's been doing very good in every way possible he can see and do. That's all one can ask of a man.

Wow, crashing food prices would be a disaster for American farmers already hit by retaliation against trump tariffs.
China has reduced imports by 5 million barrels a day. That number would not have been thought possible. If you add up all the American strategic oil reserves releases, with all the promised releases to cover for other releases, and it is more than the strategic oil reserves have.
Oil prices are artificially DOWN. And maybe it is a good thing, but it is reality.
