Sailors on USS Lincoln outside Iran are exhausted and suffering from poor morale on ship, families warn

I have heard being stuck below deck, barely seeing the sun for months, is the hardest part. It is not dangerous like being on the flight deck, but it is depressing with a high suicide rate.

I used to regularly head back to berthing or wherever after watch by going up to the hanger bay. That way I got some fresh air and a little sunshine. The suicide rate is mostly due to the most junior, and usually youngest, crew members being treated horribly. The leadership didn't give a shit about them. Many were never even told what they needed to do to advance in rank, so they just stayed stuck at E-3. They were usually given the shittest jobs too.

I remember one time I had to go to #4 JP 5 pump room to do some minor check on an electrical controller in it. Access is down a vertical ladder in a trunk that goes down like 5 or 6 decks. The safety nets, as usual, were not in place if you fell. So I was climbing down with a tool bag in hand. Not easy.
The pump room was nasty. The bilge was full of JP 5 that leaked from the pumps and valves. It shimmered in the air. There were two E-nothings in purple shirts sitting in the room. There are large "NO SMOKING" signs everywhere. One of them was dragging on a cigarette and both looked totally stoned from the fumes.

I pointed at the signs. The guy shrugged and tossed his lit cigarette in the bilge. "Won't burn" he said.

I finished up my maintenance and got the hell out of that hell hole ASAP. My bet is those two guys were assigned to sit there and turn a valve or make sure the pump was restarted if it went offline and did that for the whole WestPac. They came aboard as E-nothings. Got lungs full of jet fuel and left at the end of the cruise as E-nothings. If they'd died in there, it would likely be weeks before they were found.

Deck Division's office (starboard on like the 02 level under the island) had a sign on the door, "E-6 and above only." You weren't a 6, you needed special permission to enter. The Chiefs and officers were in there and they weren't having much to do with the junior enlisted. The E-6's were expected to take care of that. So, if you were stuck in Deck, your chances of advancing or getting a better job were damn near nil. Nobody was helping those guys get ahead and they rarely knew how to do it on their own.

In nuclear power, it was different. If you could advance, you got advanced. That was one way the Navy hoped to keep nukes in, throw globs of money at them. There weren't a whole lot of other incentives available.
I guess in the end it is debatable. Either way, the human body is not made to work long hours every day for two years without any breaks. Hegseth is crazy to even suggest such a thing.
I can tell you that you hit a wall at about 72 hours. I had to stay up more or less 24 hours a day during a RefTra where I was working at night and had damage control drills to go to all day. That went on for about a month. Hegseth is NOT the problem here. All that sort of shit long predates him and it's not just the Navy that does it.

On sailors jumping overboard, I can remember two cases of that. One was kind of hilarious, the other typical.

The first was a guy that couldn't take it anymore. He got a life raft like the pilots use if their plane goes down and jumped overboard. It was days before anyone noticed he was missing. For about a month afterwards, daily muster was a big deal until things died down and went back to usual
He died out in the Indian Ocean. Some fishing trawler found him. He didn't know how to use the solar still to make water and had almost zero food.

The other was a E-nothing that got chewed out by his Div O for something or another for the Nth time. At one point in that, the sailor said something like "I should just jump overboard..." or so the rumors went. The Div O told him something like "Go ahead, see if anyone cares..." So the guy went down to the hanger bay, took off his boondockers (boots) on elevator #1 and jumped overboard--as we were transiting San Francisco Bay near Alcatraz Island.

The local news had the whole thing on video as they had their news choppers following the ship.

There was a Navy helo up and they fished the guy out of the bay PDQ. He was taken to mast in front of the Captain where his defense was his Div O told him to do it. Not that that got him anything...

No one, that is a story from the late 1970's.

Is that so?

No one told that story during the Vietnam War, and it did not happen.

Is that a fact?

Only an idiot would spit on an young strong active serviceman.

How do you know? Oh, wait ... personal experience?

You would get your ass kicked.

Were you badly hurts? Did you file charges?

Real people who served during the Vietnam War know it is a lie.

Do they?

Find some and ask 'em to post their evidence here.

Of course, I'll understand if you don't.

I don't think you would be allowed into the hanger bay these days. They are moving around planes in there, so it can be quite dangerous.

I have several family members who served on aircraft carriers, but have not myself. I keep hearing that it is getting more and more controlled for safety. The days before the USS Forrestall are long since gone. The days before 9/11 are almost as gone.

I can tell you that you hit a wall at about 72 hours.
12 hour days, 7 days a week(84 hours a week), all for 9 to 24 months. No leaves. No days off. You can end up stuck in active duty for a year and a half after you were supposed to get out. They say there is no war, so you are not getting combat pay. Your skin is turning so light you are practically becoming translucent.

All this with Hegseth, a former male spokesmodel, telling sailors they are weak for not being able to take it.

A two year deployment will kill people. If there was an extreme situation, I could understand it, but there is not. Hegseth is killing these people to save a few bucks that will be given to the trump kids.

This is an outrage and a damn shame too?!!

parently, the ship’s doctor or therapist said they need to hit port soon or people are going to start, you know, losing their minds,’ says Bonnie York, whose stepson serves on the carrier.

Morale is plummeting on an American aircraft carrier that's running short of food and other supplies as its exhausted crew wages President Donald Trump's war against Iran, worried family members say.

Sailors and Marines serving on the USS Abraham Lincoln have told relatives about being served a half-cup of rice and two tortillas for a meal, and said the ship's store often lacks soap, deodorant and toothpaste, MS NOW reported Wednesday.

Crew members are also worn out by working long, grueling shifts, with some rarely getting a day off, and described broken toilets, moldy showers without hot water and no laundry service for weeks at a time, relatives said.

“The morale is not good,” said Bonnie York, whose stepson is aboard the Lincoln. “Apparently, the ship’s doctor or therapist said they need to hit port soon or people are going to start, you know, losing their minds.”

The Lincoln and its more than 5,000 personnel arrived in the Middle East in January, after leaving its home port of San Diego in November, according to MS NOW.

Trump launched the war against Iran without congressional approval on February 28 and initially said it would last four to five weeks. On Wednesday, he said a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and help end the war could be announced this week, according to The Associated Press.

Navy veteran Brett Snow, whose son is also on the Lincoln, warned that conditions on the ship could lead to disaster, noting that an aircraft carrier was an extremely hazardous workplace even during peacetime.

“It’s the most dangerous place in the world already, and now you’re grinding it out, day in and day out, with no breaks,” Snow said. “It’s an environment that’s ripe for accidents.”

Fake News, you traitorous piece of shit!

Unless you're in the U.S. Navy, then it is. Chicom shill.
No Chinese could keep people at sea this long and supplied. We are not the same. :nono:
Alex Krainer says that the final straw for the British Empire was when the lads decided they were no longer willing to fight and die for Empire because they got little to nothing out of it.....here the Empire has failed to protect its soldiers on land and has abused its Naval personnel.....in the dumbest of our dumb wars which has weakened America.

Trump being a lying dick does not help matters.

We might be there.

You can go there. Planes in the hanger bay are mostly, if not entirely there for heavy maintenance. It is also a common route for most of the crew to get around especially at meal times when the chow lines on the 2nd deck stretch into the passageways.

Likely. But there are limits to that. The hanger bay is also usually used as a recreation area much of the time.

For much of the ship's company, it's a three-day work week: Today, tomorrow, yesterday. If you go past your EOS date and they can't get you off the ship or you are deemed essential, they have to pay you going per diem which in the IO is about $150 a day on top of your pay. You do get sea pay, hazardous duty pay, proficiency pay, etc., which can add up to an extra $1000 or more a month on top of your normal pay.

Hegseth, contrary to your terminal level TDS is NOT the problem here.

More of your terminal TDS. This is NOT a Trump problem. It is an on-going one that the Navy leadership made for themselves.

So far this is a 9 month deployment, with an unknown number of months to go. There is no plan for an end any time soon. The USS Ford just had an 11 month deployment, but this will go longer. They are preparing for the possibility of a two year deployment. With budget cuts, they are having to do this all on a shoe string budget. Obviously, jet fuel takes priority, and jet fuel just costs more these days.

It sounds like you have a lot of experience with toilets. I will only point out that everything in life requires supplies.
And over 240 days at sea with no port calls. The Secretary of War is an idiot just like his boss.

The Secretary of War does not set a carrier's schedule. The fault lies first with the Navy's admirals. It also lies in long term flawed procurement policies and multiple administrations and Congress wanting to cut military spending in favor of more social-welfare spending.

Noncitizens have always been allowed to join the reserves, and even the active military. This has been true since the beginning of this nation, and at no time has not been true. Noncitizens were even drafted into the military. Bush pushed hard for more noncitizens, and he was BEFORE Obama.

Are you sure you were in the military? Everyone I know who was in the military knows that you do not need citizenship to join.
I strongly doubt many of the MAGA morons ever served. Those that did have clearly broken their oaths to the Constitution and are all traitors, IMO.

President Two Weeks can declare victory, rename the Strait and pooh-pooh the hardships of our military but more and more Americans are realizing he's delusional.

During Vietnam there were almost as long deployments, but they were over the horizon from Subic Bay. Basically, they sat in port for months, but hid the fact by sitting just out of port. Everyone got their leave, if they reached the end of their commitment, they went home. Supplies came out as if they were in port.

Hegseth wanted this to be two years without anyone leaving. The only way out was injuring yourself so badly you could not stay in the Navy anymore. Even then, they might keep you onboard for months.

The Democrats have been pushing for more spending on new aircraft carriers, and better conditions on aircraft carriers. Hegseth wanted worse conditions on aircraft carriers, and longer deployments. The Navy admirals were just following Hegseth's orders.

Was Hegseth ever confirmed by the Senate as "Secretary of War"?

The one thing everyone who served notices is the number of immigrants trying to become American by serving, and yet Censored did not?

Yeah, he never served.

I cant remember him this low quality fuck even once talking about his duty to take care of our sailors and soldiers.

Never Truthful Walt being untruthful again? Imagine my shock!

{
For the first time, the program — known as Military Accessions in the National Interest, or MAVNI — will be open to immigrants without a proper visa if they came to the U.S. with their parents before age 16. More specifically, they must be approved under a 2012 Obama administration policy known as Deferred Action for Child Arrivals, or DACA.

The new Pentagon policy may be the first phase of a broader government-wide effort to ease pressure on immigrants and create new paths to citizenship. President Barack Obama, frustrated with the failure of Congress to pass any substantial immigration reform, has vowed to aggressively use his presidential authority to change the way immigration policies are carried out.}

Trump, who knows everything, says the sailors are not complaining, and they have not been out there that long to feel unhappy,
