FDR and Churchill both did the same sort of thing in office. They had held political appointments to positions as Secretary of the Navy and First Sea Lord respectively. Both meddled in naval construction to the cost and detriment of their navies.
With FDR, it would be the Alaska class large cruisers that the Navy didn't want, didn't need, but got anyway because they were a pet project of his.
With Churchill, one would be the 7" UP rocket projector his "Science Advisor" Frederick Lindermann was all in on. This POS weapon was near useless and possibly contributed to the sinking of HMS Hood.
My point here is, Trump is not unique by any stretch here. Politicians do this sort of stupidity all the time and it usually ends up badly. But don't make it out that Trump is somehow the first, or only, politician to do it. He's just the latest.

The two main problems are:
1) When there are problems because of the design all the cats must be depowered to do the fix, making the carrier unable to launch anything.
2) The Cats over stress airframes, particularly the shit F-35....which even after all these years the experts have been unable to fix....only reduce.
Good thing we have more than one carrier. Also the order specifies new construction immediately, retrofit as needed/
One thing we found out for sure in the pounding we gave Iran, the F-35 is anything but shit. Your country sure put a lot into stealing designs to copy it.
The needing to take all the CATs offline was a design error...born from over optimism...the designers simply figured it would rarely happen because the system would be highly reliable...based on no evidence. Not sure if this problem has been fixed with the second carrier.....though I imagine it is fixable with a new design of the system. I have not heard anything about the over stressing of the airframes problem, nor have I heard if the Chinese systems have that problem. The answer might come down to the Chinese planes....maybe they can take more stress than the F-35...though I did hear that the American problem is related to vibrations introduced by the CAT.....that surely can be fixed with better design.
