I am the tail end of the Boomers,...born in 64. More like a Gen Xer really. Point is,...sooooooooooooo much Boomer hate out there and its just so wrong headed and stupid. Youngers blaming anything and everything on Boomers you can think of. The whole housing blame game thing is beyond ridiculous. As if its somehow our fault we were able to buy our homes for a half way reasonable price, maintain it , improve it, and hold onto it for decades, not to mention all the property taxes we paid through the years and now that we finally get to realize a substantial profit on it were not supposed to do that? Get outta here with that bullshit nonsense,...as if younger people would say.........." No,...I don't want that profit I earned over DECADES,...lets sell it way under market instead" Yeah....o.k whatever,...... :rolleyes: :rolleyes: :rolleyes: How bout this......you CRY HARDER then go out and make your own way in the world just like everyone else before you did. Hows that grab ya.......
 
What were the home values 38 yrs. prior to my purchasing my home 38 yrs. ago? Approx. half, or less what I paid.
I have done many improvements over the years, why shouldn't it be worth twice what I paid back then?
This younger generation wants to enter the job market making 6 digit pay, yet expects home prices to be at
what I paid? Ain't happening, kids...

EXACTLY!!! Its all just so dumb.
 
And like the song says,....we didn't start this shit,.....been going on since ALWAYS,......we fought it too, and quite frankly we fought it even harder then most gen z'ers ever even thought of. And we sure as hell didn't fight it living in our parents basement. Instead we just FOUND A WAY to make it work. Remember........." Adversity is the SPARK of ingenuity" TM by STONE. ;):)
 
Before that, as a kid starting at around 6th grade or so I raked leaves, mowed lawns, cleared brush.....ect ect. Then as I got older in high school I would shovel snow and worst of all, shovel snow off of roofs which Is a real bitch in Wisconsin! Shovel literally two feet of snow off a roof and then the real work is just beginning because you have to clear all that snow you shoveled off the roof that fell onto the walkways and such. Man,....I don't miss that AT ALL.

Much of politics, and especially this board, is tribal. So getting into a generational battle can break down some of those barriers. 😀

This tweet from a month ago went viral of a bunch of (largely rich) Boomers trying to block new housing in their San Francisco neighborhood. Speaking candidly it’s the ultimate fvck you I’ve got mine. And when entire cities and areas have this attitude it absolutely drives up property values and it’s no wonder people get pissed.

And as a side note, because of Prop 13, property taxes can only increase 2% per year regardless of how much your home appreciates.

So many of these people have homes that cost $3-$5m but pay taxes based on an evaluation of $500K or less.

New homes (or new sales) reset the property taxes to market value (I.e. they pay a lot more).

So these Boomers are like fvck everyone else, don’t build new housing and also in the process not help the City get the revenue it needs.

Well, part of the problem is the government, and in particular, the safety freaks. I got my first job at 16 working at W T Grant's in the hardware department. Handled chemicals. Made keys for customers--no safety glasses. Sold car tires. None of that would be allowed, even with safety gear, today. Can't have a 16-year-old exposed to potentially hazardous anything.

Today we have a society that is filled with hypochondriacs, who worry about and fear everything. Top that off with, and you are correct here, a grandiose sense of entitlement. Somebody should recognize my greatness and give me a six-figure salary for doing little to nothing... I deserve a house, car, a vacation in Cabo...

We're becoming a society of hand wringing women and manholes.

Appreciation of real estate is one thing, forced scarcity is another. In California, the shortage of housing can be traced largely, not entirely but largely, the lion's share, to one source: Government. That artificially skews the market and drives housing prices up. Because of that, something like Prop 13 is only fair. The government caused your house to appreciate far more through scarcity it created than the market would otherwise see and then the government wants to profit--tax--off of what they created.

The city / government created the problem. The People reacted and took away the ability of the government to unfairly tax them. That's the government's doing, not the People's.
