Donald Trump appeared to stand awkwardly on the stage during a visit to the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The president appeared at the center on Friday, promising to sign an executive order to create a U.S. Space Academy. While delivering remarks at the event, Trump mentioned his interest in outer space.


"I had an uncle who was a great scientist, he was a great man," he said, adding that his uncle, John G. Trump, physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for 41 years. "He loved space, he used to tell me about space, all space."



"So, I guess we have genetically, we sort of, I believe in that stuff," Trump continued. "I love it



Almost immediately, reactions started pouring in on social media after this comment. "I like how there's just zero reactions from the people behind him. I guess that's what happens when a group of NASA engineers are forced to listen to a moron with a microphone spew incoherent nonsense about space," wrote one person, adding, "Also, what the hell does it mean to 'believe in space?'"

It’s not altogether clear exactly what Space Academy graduates would do, and there’s reason for some skepticism.

For one thing, Trump’s track record related to service academies is already problematic, especially in light of what the White House has done to West Point.

For another, the president has long struggled to explain why he created Space Force in the first place, other than his apparent belief that it sounded cool.
