A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.

I think a lot of women want a man, but I don’t think every woman needs a man.

Women want the same things guys do -- to love and be loved, to have a family (but not necessarily human children), to have meaningful purpose in life, financial security. Some people can get these things in alternative ways that don't involve marriage or romance. What's important and what Steinem and other women helped achieve is choice. Because of them, women have more choices now. Whether that's a career, motherhood, marriage, being single, being able to marry a same-sex partner, get credit and buy a home w/o a male cosigner, run for high political office, serve in the military, etc. -- all things difficult or impossible for women when I was born.

Bravo 👏 👏👏👏

RIP Gloria.

I met her...sorta. She and a female friend were in a small, almost empty, restaurant at the Jersey shore. I was stopping for a take-out coffee and donut. When I saw her, I smiled and said, "You look just like Gloria Steinem." She laughed and replied, "I am Gloria Steinem." I recognized the voice and was embarrassed. It was a funny encounter.

I absolutely understand, and maybe I interpret it wrong, but I think Steinum was saying that plenty of women want a man, but no woman needs a man.

Maybe that's what she meant? I don't know. I just think it's a humorous saying that isn't really true.

No, they don't. For men, what you do--workwise--comes first in terms of who you are. For men, that is the major purpose in life. Family, a wife, and all that are options that make sense and life better, but your profession or vocation is what matters.

Also, one should note, that women will try very hard to marry "up." That is they want a guy that has it better, is better off, than the family they grew up in. Working, for women--most women--is less important than family and having a stable provider. One of the tragedies of Socialism is that the government becomes the stable provider meaning women are not incentivized to find a husband. At the same time, for women, working outside the home isn't the central focus of their life so they aren't suddenly released or incentivized to do that either.

While this is generalizing, a man will define himself by his profession or vocation. What he knows and what he does defines him. For women, they will define themselves by who they are married to, their children and family, and their wealth accumulation.

Same-sex relationships do the same thing in a different way. The screw up how nature designed things.

As for things like getting a loan, credit, etc., part of the problem women face, even today, is simply not having the personal income (not government assistance), stable job, and other economic indicators that are central to men but not women. That may sound unfair, but the lender is rating the loan or credit based on the person's economic stability, productivity, and track record.

Yes, in the past, women were often denied loans and credit simply on the basis of being female and that's wrong. But it doesn't change that for women they often simply are not in a position with their work and financial history to get those things easily.

In simplest terms, men use things they get from working to get sex. Women use sex to get things from men who worked to accumulate them.

Fun fact......The latest studies concerning female mental health show that almost 50% of American women are under a Doctors care for mental health issues to one degree or another. Sadly this means the other half are going untreated and not receiving the care they so desperately need. :cool:
