A Defense of a Liberal Arts Education

Once again, read your own shit. That is incorrect. Try glasses.
Clarke worked at Berkeley full time for his entire career. Yaghi worked at Berkeley full time at Berkeley for most of his career. Card worked at Berkeley full time for almost all of his career. Doudna immediately went back to Berkeley to work full time, because it was the only place that would allow her to work full time on the important stuff.

So that is four out of five. All worked full time at Berkeley for years before getting a Nobel Prize. Four is greater than two.

Genzel did move back to Germany, and work for Max Planck(the powerhouse research organization for Germany), but also needed to work part time for Berkeley.

Now let's look at the Nobel Prizes since 2020 of people associated with Texas and Florida... And we have now listed them all and their connection to Texas and Florida.

Four full time workers at Berkeley and one part time worker at Berkeley... Meanwhile the entire states of Texas and Florida have ZERO!!!

No it is not. Only one worked at Berkeley his entire career. Only one.

So that is a "no" then?

Liberal Arts was known as "General Education" until the 1980's. It was basically an undeclared major for those who weren't serious about building a career, but sought a degree for cultural status. Generally those who did apply a general ed degree to a profession went into teaching.

"Liberal Arts" is a degraded form of the old G.E. - but perverted by shit such as gender or ethnic studies. Liberal Arts basically means "too fucking stupid to earn a legitimate degree."
Your post is dumb.

When you look at a culture, and you want to ask yourself: “Well, how did we go from Weimar Germany to Nazism?” Obviously, education is going to be a part of that, but it’s not in any way going to be the whole of it.

I don’t buy that Nazism is proof that higher learning doesn’t work. The point of fact is that the Nazis were very much against higher education in many ways and wanted to constrain and control it.

You have to go back Squire...

1)John Clarke (Physics 2025) worked at Lawrence Berkeley and Berkeley proper his entire post graduate school professional career, doing all his research at Berkeley.
2)Omar Yaghi(Chemistry 2025) moved to UC Berkeley from UCLA in 2012, doing most of his Nobel research at UC Berkeley, but having done some at UCLA(also part of the University of California system)
3)David Card(Economics 2021) after doing a few years post-doc at Princeton, started working at Berkeley in 1997. Did all his Nobel work at Berkeley.
4) Jennifer Doudna(Chemistry 2020) moved to Berkeley in 2002. She left Berkeley in 2009 to work in the private sector. They refused to allow her to research CRISPR, so two months later she was back at Berkeley. Berkeley saw the promise in her proposed research, and allowed her to cancel all other obligations to just research CRISPR. That has created one of the biggest breakthroughs in biology ever.
5) Reinhard Genzel(Physics 2020) moved to Berkeley in 1981. In 1986, accepted a position at Max Planck Garshing(I have been there), but kept a part time position at Berkeley. He spent part of his year in Germany, and part of his year in Berkeley.
Nobody affiliated with the University of Texas system won a Nobel Prize in 2025.

Also, it would be absolutely embarrassing to compare the number of total Novel Prize laureates from University of California with the total number from University of Texas.

Whatever that was, did not read it. You clearly know nothing about Franfurt School.

Fvck Vince Young and Fvck UT. If that whole system went under I would celebrate.

That said, UT is a top 30 school in the country. It's not an Ivy, but it's one of the top public Universities.

So I'm trying to understand why your identity is so tied up in Cal, a school you didn't go to, having more Nobel Prize winners than UT.

I repeatedly referred to the University of California system in this thread. The 2025 Nobel Prize winners were from UCLA, Berkeley, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara as best I recall.

What does it matter what school I went to? California is a global leader in scientific research, medical research, and Nobel Prize laureates. That's a claim Texas, Florida, and the deep South cannot make.

The University of California won five Nobel Prizes in 2025 in physics, chemistry, and medical science.

Which one, or ones? USC? Davis? Santa Barbara (yes, Physics), San Diego? UCLA (yes, medicine).

To the best of my knowledge the University of Texas and University of Florida won zero in 2025.

And?

I like to think the Nobel has some meaning still in hard sciences, but even that is doubtful.

Just the title of this OP......"A defense of a 'LIBERAL' arts education" should make
everyone cringe. Anything having to do with the word 'LIBERAL', especially when it
comes to the political association of that word should make everyone dismiss that
type of liberal education.

Why are you on here blathering about education and relative merit to universities? You got your BS and you couldn't go any further.

Plenty of southern Universities have produced amazing ground breaking research that you have never heard of and couldn't even understand if you did. What university gave us Buckminsterfullerene?

UT Southwest Medical Center is home to at least 3 Nobel Laureates

UNC Chapel Hill is also associated with Nobel Laureates.

Grubs and Nirenberg from FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY are also both Nobel Laureates.

If Florida were such a backwater why would Paul Dirac wind up working at FSU as well?

Why do you insist on talking about things you have no clue about? I know you are jealous of people who COULD function in the heady levels of R&D and you were just a tech in whatever you did (when you were making up fantasies about being a "geophysicist")

Oh fuckin' grow up. The word liberal doesn't mean what you think it does. Moron.
