Why?
Why?
My wife is a teacher and the parents of one of her students thought it was important to restrain her arms with belts and beat her.I know of women who believe the practice is crucial to preventing precious daughters from becoming whores. For FGM to be universally immoral, you have to talk to those women first. Until then, you don't have universal agreement that there is even harm.
When you asked them this question, what was their answer? My wife is a teacher and the parents of one of her students thought it was important to restrain her arms with belts and beat her.
Are they moral?
Stop avoiding and answer the questionWhen you asked them this question, what was their answer?
There is a difference between ethics and politics. Why?
Is it legal in the US. The only question. My wife is a teacher and the parents of one of her students thought it was important to restrain her arms with belts and beat her.
Are they moral?
Yep, but neither has anything to do with morality. There is a difference between ethics and politics.
Explain.Yep, but neither has anything to do with morality.
Legality does make something moral. Slavery was legal. Is it legal in the US. The only question.
The question I asked was "Do you agree that FGM is universally immoral because of the harm it causes teenage girls?"Explain.
I do not see how morality can be forced on people. Law can.Legality does make something moral. Slavery was legal.
No, I asked you to explain how morality is different from ethics. The question I asked was "Do you agree that FGM is universally immoral because of the harm it causes teenage girls?"
You said no.
I asked why.
That's where we are.
Morality is generally forced via laws.I do not see how morality can be forced on people. Law can.
No such thing as universal morality. It is an invention of Immanuel Kant.Morality is generally forced via laws.
But, that wasn't the question. The question was "Do you agree that FGM is universally immoral because of the harm it causes teenage girls?"
You said No.
I asked why?
So again....why?
Now we've gone full circle. No such thing as universal morality. It is an invention of Immanuel Kant.
You are conflating something being wrong with an abstract universal principle. And, as I said before, is this a practice in the US?Now we've gone full circle.
You said that FGM was immoral because of the harm it does to teenage girls. I agree.
So if FGM harms girls and that harm is what makes the action immoral, when would it be moral to perform the act? When is FGM not harming the girl?
If FGM is immoral because of the harm it does to the girl, and FGM harms the girl every time it is performed, how is it not universally immoral? You are conflating something being wrong with an abstract universal principle. And, as I said before, is this a practice in the US?
Universal morality is a meaningless concept. Where is it practiced? That is the problem for where it occurs. They do it in Niger, so why is that my problem? If FGM is immoral because of the harm it does to the girl, and FGM harms the girl every time it is performed, how is it not universally immoral?
Does it harm the girls it is performed on in Niger?Universal morality is a meaningless concept. Where is it practiced? That is the problem for where it occurs. They do it in Niger, so why is that my problem?
I suppose. But neither of us live in Niger. Why is this an issue for you? Do you want US military to intervene and force it?Does it harm the girls it is performed on in Niger?
