Being human is hard, this pair of psychologists say. Could accepting we don’t have free will make it easier?

If you really believed your bullshit about how humans lack all free will, agency, and choice then walk up to your husband and announce you did not freely choose him. You were forced to pair with him because of some inanimate and impersonal electric field potential completely beyond your control.

Niiiice homophobia there Cy.

Your true nature shines through

I'll take that to mean you would never, ever, under any circumstances announce to your spouse that you never freely chose to be with them; you were forced to be with them by an inanimate electrical field potential.

So despite parading around this board hollering that humans have absolutely no free will, agency, or choice, you are not willing to put that belief into practice by announcing to your spouse that you did not freely choose to be with them. Some unspecified and inanimate electrical field potential just forced you.

In answer to your question don’t be so sure. My partner also enjoys science and actually finds the implications of this research to be fascinating

But then my partner is also much more educated than you and your wife (who one assumes is a first cousin)

Do you want to call me a faggot now too?

Split brain studies (in which the Corpus Collosum has been severed thus eliminating communication between the left and right hemispheres) show that the Left hemisphere is more than capable of making up stories to explain events it did not actually perceive.

Stimuli (images) were shown to a split brain patient but the information was presented ONLY to the Right Hemisphere (they can do this with visual manipulation) and then the patient was given a task based on what they saw. The left hemisphere did not get a particular stimulus but the right did so when the task was completed action was taken that wouldn't comport with what the left saw. Dr. Gazzaniga explains it better from the article:

"We showed a split-brain patient two pictures: To his right visual field, a chicken claw, so the left hemisphere saw only the claw picture, and to the left visual field, a snow scene, so the right hemisphere saw only that. He was then asked to choose a picture from an array placed in full view in front of him, which both hemispheres could see. His left hand pointed to a shovel (which was the most appropriate answer for the snow scene) and his right hand pointed to a chicken (the most appropriate answer for the chicken claw).

We asked why he chose those items. His left-hemisphere speech center replied, “Oh, that’s simple. The chicken claw goes with the chicken,” easily explaining what it knew. It had seen the chicken claw. Then, looking down at his left hand pointing to the shovel, without missing a beat, he said, “And you need a shovel to clean out the chicken shed.” Immediately, the left brain, observing the left hand’s response without the knowledge of why it had picked that item, put it into a context that would explain it. It knew nothing about the snow scene, but it had to explain the shovel in front of his left hand. Well, chickens do make a mess, and you have to clean it up. Ah, that’s it! Makes sense.

What was interesting was that the left hemisphere did not say, “I don’t know,” which was the correct answer. It made up a post hoc answer that fit the situation. It confabulated, taking cues from what it knew and putting them together in an answer that made sense."

So OF COURSE you may feel like you are in control of decisions but clearly the "interpretter" module in the Left hemisphere is expert at post hoc justification for your actions.

It seems to show not only that we have no "central control" but rather one sided interpretter. Are our minds really our own?

Feel discomforted yet? Or just gonna scream some philosophy?

[I honestly get it. This shit is crazy sounding and really bizarre. But like the blind spot in your visual field which you never actually see or perceive, it is still there and can be confirmed by science. Go ahead and run from the implications of the science. Just like the classical physicists screamed that Quantum could not possibly be true. The science says what it says.]
No science here...move along...move along...

There is no scientific consensus on what is fundamentally a philosophical question.
Science does not use consensus.
Science is not philosophy.
The detection of a neurological electrical potential two milliseconds before you move your arm does nothing to disprove or falsify that we have conscious veto power, agency, the ability to deliberate.
You cannot veto it. You have already committed to the movement of your own free will.

None of these guys are willing to walk up to their spouses or boyfriends and announce that they didn't choose them, they only ended up with them because inanimate and unconscious electrical field potentials forced them to pick.
Why would they? They did choose them.

Science is not a research.
Science is not philosophy.
Science is not 'free will' or lack of free will.
Science is not a degree.
Science is not a credential.

Courtier's fallacy.
Science is not a Magick word.
