JD, in our tribal environment here I give you credit to speaking to this.
I think of seeing a documentary of 1965 Mississippi and how freely people used the n*word there (although use of the word was hardly exclusive to that state).
But to your point, in 2006? Outside of black people saying it, and young people (hip hop is ubiquitous in our culture now and a lot of younger people say the word when listening to songs as well as saying it because they think it's cool), it would probably get national attention if millions of people were using the word as a slur.

I truthfully haven't heard the slur much at all as long as I've been alive. Well, outside of some rap songs. Of course, I live in the Northern state of Michigan, where I don't think it's been that prevalent. Even Volsrock doesn't use it, even though he acts as if he'd jump at the opportunity to say it.

Great point on Volstruck. We can find instances of its use in the last 20 years, but those tend to be isolated events. It's just not an acceptable word in our discourse.
(I know it's TV, but I remember seeing a clip from All In The Family when Archie was at the Jefferson's and someone said the N*word and even Archie was surprised saying "i haven't used that word in years". This was like 1972)

Hmm, bit of a stretch there Jarod. Ever since the 1970's, the burgeoning gay rights movement has been trying to compare itself to black civil rights, or any racial minority efforts for equality.
As a young man on campus, I got into many heated arguments when I stated these two irrefutable facts; being Homosexual and all it's permutations is not the same as a "race" of people. And if by some quirk of nature the majority of "gay" people were non-white, none of this would even be a question because the minorities would first gave to win civil rights before the "sub group" even became a question.
So no, calling someone a tranny is not the same on any level as ALL the colorful.slurs used for black folk in yhe last 3 centuries or so.

FYI the death penalty for homosexuality was still on the books when the colonies were formed, and being outed as a homosexual up until a few decades ago was extremely dangerous.
There were black men in the US who owned slaves, taichi. They weren't all slaves.
If we're being honest, the gays fought a long, hard battle to have any rights at all, and now there are other fringe movements trying to tag onto the gay rights movement, and it's not fair to them. There are a lot of gay people who don't think that trans-men should be reading books to other people's 6-yr-olds, or competing in women's sports.
