More than 4 in 10 Americans said they are struggling to afford basic living costs amid rising inflation levels in the country, according to polling data released Wednesday.

The Pew Research Center surveys, which were conducted in late July and August, found that 44 percent of U.S. adults reported struggling to pay for basic necessities like medical care, rent or mortgage, transportation and food.

Rising costs had an even greater impact on lower income Americans, as 71 percent of those surveyed said they struggled with costs for at least one of these expense categories.

Additionally, 60 percent of people said they did not have enough income to "lead the kind of life they want," while 53 percent said they did not have sufficient emergency funds.

The inflation rate in August was 3.4 percent, down from 3.7 percent in July. Since then, the Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported further increases to the consumer price index, including a 0.6 percent increase in September.

Gas prices have accounted for a sizable share of the inflation rate increases, as the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz during the Iran war placed a sustained strain on global energy supplies.

A gallon of regular gas was around $4.33 a gallon in the U.S. on Wednesday afternoon, up from about $3.08 a year ago, according to AAA. The average cost of diesel has also spiked to more than $6 a gallon — an increase of more than $2 from last year.

President Trump has attempted to calm concerns about rising costs of living amid this conflict and his administration's tariff fight with Canada ahead of the midterm elections, in which affordability is expected to be a top issue for voters at the ballot box.

During a Tuesday campaign rally in Alaska, the president did not offer hope that the months-long conflict was nearing a close, telling the crowd he has "had it" with Iran's leaders and added that his administration was "going to do a number" on the country.

The Pew report released Wednesday was based on findings from two surveys among a sample of 5,166 U.S. adults with a margin of error of approximately 1.6 percentage points. One poll was conducted from Aug. 24-30, while the other was conducted from July 20 to Aug. 9.

Just a few more weeks till Nov

As Trump suggests, pretend he's on your State's ballot when you cast your vote. Then remember how much it cost you to drive to the polls and the cost it will be for dinner. Remember think of Trump and the Republicans as you cast your Vote. It is also an IQ Test

Well, inflation is running about 2 to 3% which is pretty normal outside massive Leftist spending sprees.
If inflation had hit 2%, that would be a huge story... It has not happened. Inflation is bouncing between 3% and 4%. Eight months ago it was below 3%, but not since. And the eight months ago numbers are looking just plain wrong right now.

CPI jumped by 0.6% in September, which would be an annualized 7.4%. That could very well just be a blip... But it also could be something really bad.

Odd that you would mention a "massive Leftist spending sprees" with trump spending out of control, and driving up the deficit to insane heights.

More than 4 in 10 Americans [in Blue States] said they are struggling to afford basic living costs amid rising inflation levels [imposed by their Democrat leaders while nonetheless blaming Trump].
FTFY. You are gullible. Red States aren't experiencing this. Only Blue States are, and stupid Democrat voters aren't able to put two and two together to correctly blame their own political party.

Democrats might very well be the stupidest people on the planet.

[Democrat-induced pain] had an even greater impact on lower income Americans [who the DNC HATES], as 71 percent of [Democrat loyalists] surveyed said they struggled with costs for at least one of these expense categories.
FTFY. More and more Democrats are tired of being stupid and are abandoning the DNC and their mind-destroying echo chamber.

Additionally, 60 percent of [random homeless people] said they did not have enough income to "lead the kind of life they want," while 53 percent said they did not have sufficient emergency funds.
FTFY. One has to be an idiot to believe even a single word of this kind of DNC propaganda.

34% of Americans are paying for groceries with credit cards, that’s not a good sign.

Terry is incapable of seeing facts and truth beyond partisan bias and it requires him to lie about what he sees.

As you point it out it was back in 2025 up to Jan2026 when inflation was between 2-3% and it has been between 3-4% since, which is half the time Trump has held power this term.

And Terry is incapable of citing a wrong Trump or any right gov't does so he only sees leftist debt and spending. If Trump or the right does it it is ok or does not exist.

When i challenged Terry on this and asked him to name a single thing any and all prior Republican gov'ts have done, he struggled to answer and then when i push him he said 'typically they do not do enough... do not act big enough when in power', meaning he wants much bigger gov't and actions when it is republicans as he cannot see a single negative that comes from them. The just need to do more and bigger things in his view.

He has partisan brain rot.

In the real world, Red States are feeling the affordability crunch more than Blue States.

One has to be an idiot to believe even a single word of this kind of DNC propaganda.
One thing about economic problems, you can deny them all you want, but people just feel them.

They believe trump will fix everything by magic, and then when he does not, they blame us for not believing in trump. trump should not need everyone to believe in him.
