The mRNA tricks ribosomes, who's job it is to produce polypeptides and proteins, into producing a spike protein that mimicks the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, so if the actual COVID spike protein shows up, your body recognizes it as not belonging there and your immune system attacks it.
