that was my next point. Guardsmen are not diciplined enough to handle domestic issues like this, so posturing with empty weapons for cnn and the media is rather something they should discourage.

if you are saying there is a cache somewhere that has loaded mags, I dunno, possible. I never worked really with guard units.
my point stands, the purpose of taking pictures of guardsmen inside buildings with empty plate carriers, no magazines and an acog serves one purpose, photo ops.
If you were ever in the military then you'd know that it takes a lot of people to run guard posts and checkpoints 24/7.
Calculate the size of the area you want to defend. Determine how many layers of checks points and perimeter guards walking about. Total up the manpower then multiply by 3.5 to cover 8 hour shifts, sick, family emergencies, et.
It adds up quick. If it was a long term thing, the guards would eventually be replaced with more electronic surveillance. I doubt it will be. This will be phased down to something far less than it is now, but a bit more money spent on a permanent surveillance system for the DCPD and FBI.
Kent State was a different time and, most certainly, a national tragedy.
Not all Guard units are the same. Some may carry loaded magazines, others may have an Officer or SNCO with a buttpack full of loaded magazines or access to a locked box full of loaded magazines.

Their Unit Armorer and their assistants will usually carry the ammo, already loaded in the mags, and yes some units will have ammo on them if not loaded in their weapon.
Agreed. Training day-in, day-out as opposed to only one weekend a month and a two week vacation to Fort Hood will certainly produce different results.
