A mortal blow to Young Earth creationism

seems like every year there is a new discovery that rewrites the presumed history of man on earth.
I'm inclined to withhold opinion until such time as they have sufficient data to make a better theory.

The use of DNA and our mapping of the human genome has added immensely to the understanding of our evolution. 30 years ago, for instance, we had no idea that most modern humans' DNA contains snippets from other humanoid species... Denisovan, Neanderthal, and some yet to be discovered.

Thank you for adding some brainpower to the thread.

How do you manage to tolerate the scientific illiteracy of the right wing?

I tolerate it by equating it to comedy gold

Mostly you just have to ignore it. I try to provide some scientific info, but when it's rejected I just shake my head and move on. It is impossible to fix stupid, particularly the willful ignorance kind.

Hello Cypress,

A good observation.

I don't see churches going away completely any time soon.

People don't always go to a church because they need to reaffirm their beliefs.

They often go just for the social interaction and a sense of belonging to something greater than themselves.

I bet there are a LOT of agnostics in churches who are simply afraid to talk about their true feelings.

Gotta be a lot of frustration there.

We don't see any frustrated people here on this forum, do we?

:rofl2:

I think it is difficult to talk about religion, agnosticism, atheism because they are poorly defined terms.

Some fundamentalist christians would not recognize Shinto, Buddhism, or animism as religions.

Some of them do not even recognize Catholics as fellow christians.

That is a dogmatic and very narrow minded view of world faith traditions.

Some atheists are genuinely opposed to all religion and mysticism.

A lot of atheists just only seem to be hostile to the Abrahamistic God, particularly the Christian version of it.

Is that really atheism? Or is it just anti-christian zealotry?

People argue about what agnosticism actually means.

I try to avoid labelling myself with any of these dogmatic and one dimensional definitions. But part of the fun is discussing it, and seeing where there is consensus and common ground

Every tribe has a leader, a slacker, and a god's gift. Into the Night is our god's gift.

I openly claim to be an atheist because it best describes my beliefs. But I certainly don't think I have any business to tell anybody else what they should believe. It's a fine line. I feel freer to talk about it here anonymously than IRL. I think it is better to know somebody fairly well before going there, normally.

The problem with talking about it IRL is some Christians take it so personally, and there are so many religions that view non-belief as evil.

That becomes a weakness of religion. Any religion which has to disparage other beliefs is no longer being a proponent of it's own philosophy, but instead becomes a negative view of others. In other words, it becomes a negative.

Why do you presume to speak for atheists? Atheists will spend no time thinking about god and religion if you guys did not bring it up so frequently. We think of it as the Easter Bunny or Santa. We spend no time on whether it is true or not. Religion is an entire waste of time.

Unfortunately, some people get emotionally invested in their religion, or even in their atheism.

I try to be generally open minded about genuine religious and atheist traditions, and have the threads to prove it.

As my thread title implies, I am making fun of fundamentalist christians.

Anything I wrote about atheists, or agnostics is strictly clinical and based on detached observation.

I specifically went out of my way to state there is no unified and universal truth to attempts to define these intellectual traditions.

I read something recently about the recovery of genetic material from Homo Erectus remains. It wasn't DNA, but I think they recovered some information on proteins which may be useful in understanding human evolution.

After frantically googling for information about isotope dating you may have giggled and thought this was a "gotcha" post.

But you did not realize scientists use a suite of radiometric dating techniques based on the geologic age of the phenomena of interest, including carbon, uranium, strontium and potassium isotopes.

The moral of the story is you really cannot become scientifically literate by frantically googling for five minutes.
