Obama spent 8 years nurturing along ties with North Korea. We rewarded good behavior, and penalized bad behavior. After 8 years, the best North Koreans possible were in the top positions.
A side note here, the "best possible" were a scary, sad lot. If North Korea were a normal country, the best would be fantastic. North Korea is the worst, so the best of the worst is very bad.
So trump had an easiest possible road to peace, which is to say a very difficult road to peace. Again, North Korea very bad.
If trump had accomplished something, anything, I would be giving him credit for that. I would be forced to admit that trump did have deal making abilities. But, instead trump tried to sell Kim timeshares. I am not kidding. trump actually saw this all as some sort of personal real estate opportunity. It was a huge failure.
So now everyone in any position of authority willing to accept peace has either been killed or is in prison. For a generation or two, no peace will be possible. If trump had just kicked the can down the road, at least we could have gotten peace a little later.
North Korea has closed itself off the the world even more than they were before. An entire month went by without anyone entering or leaving North Korea. That is a level of closed off that has not existed in our world in centuries. They are very poor, but also the richest they have ever been. They are unlikely to rebel any time soon.
My grandchildren may well have to deal with North Korea, and they are not yet born.
