Students should be told that universities are not there to protect their feelings, academics claimed today after a professor resigned over her views on gender.

Professor Kathleen Stock, 48, an expert in gender and sexual orientation, quit her job at the University of Sussex this week after a 'bullying and harassment' campaign labelled her a 'transphobe'.

And appalled colleagues are up in arms, demanding that students are told in freshers' week that universities are there to hold up academic freedom.

Professor Michael Biggs, an expert in sociology at Oxford University, said the blame for the 'ludicrous' culture at education institutions lies with the universities themselves, not 'young and immature' students.

Wrong-think!

She'll never work again.

How does her questioning the idea that gender identity is more "socially significant" than biological sex make her transphobic?

Although I disagree with her, but she has the right to express her view.

It's like that Bank Robber said about Banks ... paraphrasing 'Students are where the Money is'.

Stock is a philosophy professor. She has been attacked by academics for having the wrong views on gender and feminism. It is a shame students have nothing better to do than harass a philosophy professor--instead of engaging her in debate.

Philosopher Kathleen Stock resigns her position at the University of Sussex
The Guardian's coverage is here. This, alas, will be taken as a victory by the miscreants, even though, as the news article makes clear, Professor Stock had the full support of the University.

UPDATE: Professor Stock was advised by police to stay away from campus and install security devices at her home, as a result of the latest "student" protests against her views; this was the culmination of a years-long campaign of denunciations by other Sussex academics, philosophy faculty and students in the UK and abroad, and unrelenting toxic abuse and lies on Twitter. Professor Stock is a parent, as well as an academic; all of this must have been horrifying and frightening at times. Despite this, the cruelty and viciousness of "professional" philosophers can't even take a break when she finally resigns her position.

The philosophy professor was awarded an OBE in the 2021 new year honours list for services to higher education.

But hundreds of academics criticised the decision, signing an open letter that criticised Stock’s comments on transgender and gender non-conforming people.

The letter claimed her “harmful rhetoric” about transgender and gender non-conforming people reinforced “the patriarchal status quo”.

Sick of this "patriarchy" crap. My god, she is a female professor.

The mob is incapable of debate. It relies on bullying.
