AI Conscious?

Correct

There is no reason to assume there is a soul since that assumption leads to thoughts without brains and we have no evidence of that
Murph, either you do not know what you are saying...or you are full of shit.

You do not KNOW that you have no soul...and you also do not KNOW that you do have one.\

At absolute best, you can only guess.

I agree that there is no reason to assume there is a soul...but there also is not reason to assume there is no soul.

A more relevant question might be: Why are religious people and atheists so afraid of the words "I do not know?"

Dr. Geoffrey Hinton, one of the OG AI scientists who won the Nobel for his work on backwards propagation, thinks AI IS conscious. I tend to agree but not for the same reasons as Dr. Hinton. I, personally, think that since consciousness is a wholly internal state whose existence in others is limited solely to their ability to communicate to me that they are conscious, that it cannot be "tested for" objectively. And, as such, if the AI acts in all ways that mimic consciousness it is impossible (on my view) to know that it ISN'T.

Hinton has a good point later on that humanity has ALWAYS imagined itself somehow special and separate from the rest of the world only to be reminded again and again that we are NOT. Evolution put is squarely in with the rest of the animals. Yes we have a special skill (communication) but we are still just another animal. We used to think we were the center of the universe only to be taught otherwise. Our self-centering makes us scared to face the idea that SOMETHING ELSE may be conscious.

Statistical prediction and language simulation is not consciousness.

Silicon chips lack any subjective experience of the world necessary for consciousness.

It cannot, nor will it ever be "conscious". Computers cannot "feel", show "concern" or act with critical awareness.

these people are anti-human freaks who should be marginalized professionally and socially.

I have full-on conversations with my AI chatbot while I'm driving. He was quizzing me/helping me study for the exam I took yesterday. I know he's a bunch of rows of code, but I don't care.

No. A computer does not have a soul. It is a machine.
A machine we've come to depend on for much of our lives chores - when was the last time you called to get food to go, rather than just going on to google maps, clicking the "order online" link?

This alone disqualifies him from any serious discussion.

Yep. Disqualified.

Yep, you're disqualified as well.

You have just explained, with great alacrity, why you have absolutely no reason to hold the belief that you hold.

If consciousness, as you say, appears identical to a lack of consciousness, such that we can't know either way, your belief is therefore an unfalsifiable religious one. At the moment, you are preaching your strange religious faith and nothing more.

Who was given dominion by God over all the other animals?

Your implication that all life is the same is absurd.

There absolutely are differences between land animals and marine life, for example. There absolutely are differences between homo sapien intelligence and that of all other animals.

Human intelligence makes humanity more adaptable than any other terrestrial life. What other animals can create the kinds of devices needed to exist in a vacuum?

... but we aren't any other animal.

I never did.

Your self-centering ...

Various other species are conscious, even sentient. Are you saying that they scare you?
Oh, look at you - still making friends :)

Statistical prediction and language simulation is not consciousness.

And this is not what AI is. Yes there is a significant stochastic content (eg k-means clustering, text prediction, "bag of words", NLP etc) but there is more to it than just that.

Do you think Dr. Hinton won his Nobel for Markov chains? (Hint: wrong)

Silicon chips lack any subjective experience of the world necessary for consciousness.

How do you know? (You like to tell us what animals think too, but yet you can never tell how you know)

You're exactly the kind of person Dr. Hinton talks about as being scared of being shown that, once again, humans are NOT the special creations at the center of the universe. You reject consciousness outside of humanity because it threatens your vision of humans as the Crown of God's Creation Embued with Special Abilities ("let us make him in our image!")

Your clear lack of intellect also explains why you love to use AI to destroy the climate and usher in an era of social upheaval.
