"Attorney General William Barr has appointed U.S. attorney John Durham as a special counsel to investigate the origins of the FBI’s probe of Russian interference in the 2016 election."

"The appointment formalizes Durham’s ongoing probe, but more significantly, would give Durham latitude to continue the politically explosive investigation after President-elect Joe Biden takes office in January."

"The extension of Durham's probe into the Biden administration raises the specter that it could stretch even longer than Mueller's 22-month probe of Russian interference and the Trump campaign. Democrats noted the duration of Durham's efforts and blasted Barr for his decision."

“In an appointment secretly conferred on Durham prior to the election and only disclosed now that Barr concedes there is no evidence of election fraud to overturn the results, Barr is using the special counsel law for a purpose it was not intended: to continue a politically motivated investigation long after Barr leaves office"

Must be Billy Barr felt he could at least appease Trump after declaring even he couldn't find any fraud in the 2020 election and had to publicly admit the truth

Interesting how the champion for the imperial presidency, who was appointed as Trump's fixer for largely authoring a lengthy narrative on his disapproval of Mueller investigating a sitting President, appoints a Special Prosecutor during a lame duck period on his way out the door.

Matters little, obvious Durham ain't found anything in the seven months he has been at it, and although it is questionable if Biden could fire Durham, the new AG can control the scope and size of Druham's investigation, just like Rosenstein and Barr did with Mueller, ain't going to be any probe into "the truth ain't the truth" Rudi's Biden innuendos

Christ it's been so long I can't even recall the scope of Durham's charter.
This is either the mother of all RICO or a giant waste of trying to make abuse of power into a criminal charges

one of these days Durham will croak up results.

Gives him greater power in DoJ for one thing - not sure if it improves his investigatory power

lie. The Horowitz IG reported Abuse of Power -many of them.
Continuation to a Special Counsel is in the same realm as the Russian Hoax investigation
it is not "politically motivated"

Yeah, it was a CYA for Barr and nothing more.

cant shut down a Special Counsel without being accused of political motivations to do so
See why they are loathsome constructs? they run wild

Special Counsels report to the AG. In a normal administration the AG is not politically tied to the President's whims. The special counsel will have to justify their existence with the AG. If there is no legal reason for them to exist then the AG can just cut funding to them without firing them.

Which will be summarily stopped Jan 21

The whole point with the change to SC was to keep Biden from shutting Durham down.

I love it. Biden will be in the exact same position as Trump was with respect to Mullet: Biden risks an obstruction charge if he tries any malarkey with Durham.

Wouldn’t it be a hoot if Durham charges Biden with obstruction.

of course a new AG has 'authority', but a new AG of a new party coming in and shutting down a special counsel
would draw charges of corruption and cover up

His "investigating power" will be closely regulated by the new Attorney General.

And this and Mueller's investigation are more dissimilar than anything else. Bottom line, Obama did not appoint Mueller, he was appointed by a Trump nominated Assistant Attorney General in a Trump Judicial Department. Neither Obama nor his AG at the end of his Presidency, Loretta Lynch, didn't leave initiate a special investigation as they were leaving the White House, which is exactly what Barr is doing here, how can it be anything but politically motivated?

he gave Trump a proctology exam and came up with nothing but (possible) obstructions.

I heard our old friend Weissmann- something about he wants investigations to go on for Trump
See if I can find it

FACTUAL RESULTS OF THE OBSTRUCTION INVESTIGATION

A. The Campaign's Response to Reports About Russian Support for Trump
B. The President's Conduct Concerning the Investigation of Michael Flynn
C. The President's Reaction to Public Confirmation of the FBl's Russia Investigation
D. Events Leading Up To and Surrounding the Termination of FBI Director Corney
E. The President's Efforts to Remove the Special Counsel
F. The President's Efforts to Curtail the Special Counsel Investigation
H. The President's Further Efforts to Have the Attorney General Take Over the Investigation
I. The President Orders McGahn to Deny that the President Tried to Fire the Special Counsel
J. The President's Conduct Towards Flynn, Manafort,
K. The President's Conduct Involving Michael Cohen

what? I cant follow that. sorry
Durham was appointed to look at what the IG found ( 'irregularities' to use the current buzz word)
in terms of criminal violations.
He was especially to look at the predicate for the FBI counter-intelligence investigation that was turned into
the Russian Hoax by Comey and company desperate to use Steele to take out Trump

Strict scope which both Rosenstein and Barr tightly controlled, there was a reason he couldn't go beyond investigating straight forward criminal charges regardless of the evidence he found
his scope was expanded by Rosenweasel later on . I think the increased scope is secret - or i never saw it

lol that's it. Weissman wants DoJ to look at "obstruction" nebulous that Mueller left sitting on Congress's porch
to follow up on impeaching Trump
