Before your time in the '80's there were plenty on the American left that nominally supported communism and Russia. You won't hear them say that today after its utter and total failure but they were here. Now you have them turning to Cuba and at one point Venezuela although they are awfully quiet now.
Capitalism also kills in the 10’s of millions.
