  • Around inauguration: ~$2.70 per gallon (week of Jan. 18, 2021: $2.696; week of Jan. 25: $2.716).
  • January 2025 (end of term): $3.634 monthly average. December 2024 was $3.494.
  • Change from start to end: roughly +$0.93–$0.94 per gallon, or about 34–35%.

Annual averages (EIA/FRED):


  • 2021: $3.287
  • 2022: $4.989
  • 2023: $4.214
  • 2024: $3.760

The four-year average during the Biden term was about $4.06–$4.08.


Prices peaked in June 2022 at $5.754—more than double the January 2021 level—driven by the post-COVID demand rebound, tight distillate inventories, and the energy shock after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
