Bush says Trump 'makes me look pretty good' by comparison

Reagan started the meme that the government is the problem, not a solution. He was the firsts step in the plutocracy we are headed for. He gave lots of money to those on the top, like all Repub presidents do. He was the first to preach trust the wealthy not your elected leaders. Since Reagan ,the right has pounded that message and the low information voters fell for it.

Trump is floundering along. His tax cut was in the style of Reagan though. Lots more money to the wealthy. Tell the rest it is for them and they will believe it, because they desperately want to. The wealth gap is worse that the Gilded Age, and Trump makes it worse.

Did California pass Prop 13 in '78 because of Reagan?

You say you are 75 years old and think Reagan was the first person to claim government wasn't the solution to our problems? Did you not pay attention to anything politically during the first half of your life? I could list way more names but do Hayek, Friedman or Buckley ring a bell to you?

the question was about what various Presidents did in their first year legislative wise. Call it whatever you like but we into Afghanistan during Bush's first year. (it goes without saying not all legislation or Presidential actions are good but good or bad wasn't the criteria)
i got dyslexic on all this..you were talking about Reagan..?? forget it

What were Bush's tax cuts then?

Legislative wise Bush did more than Trump. He also did it during a recession. Reagan did his during a severe recession

Trump’s tax reform was the first since Reagan. Bush passed a tax cut.

Reagan didn’t inherit a regulatory morass to undo and likewise with Bush. Trump inhereited one and he deserves credit for cleaning it up. Trump has been appointing textualist judges to the federal bench and Bush left us nothing comparable to Gorsuch.

It’s a wonder more conservatives don’t like Trump.

Reagan didn't face a regulatory morass? Look at where our country was in 1981 when he took office. LBJ and Nixon basically completed the entitlement state by 1975. Things were so bad even Jimmy Carter supported deregulating airlines and trains. There's a reason it's called the Reagan Revolution and it's because he completely turned around the direction the country was headed and is somewhat still on that same path.

I think I can speak for other conservatives like me who didn't vote for Trump. Not voting for Trump doesn't mean I no longer support tax cuts or think Gary Pruitt was a bad person to put in charge of the EPA. I support conservative policy. I didn't vote for Clinton but I wasn't upset when he signed the capital gains tax cut.

Reagan changed the whole way a generation thought about its relationship with the government. No President is perfect and Reagan certainly wasn't but he was consistent in his rhetoric and what he stood for, what it meant to be conservative. He also brought hope and pride in America and what she stands for. Trump is the opposite. He's a populist with no true governing beliefs other than he likes to do deals. That isn't conservative.

So like I said I support when he passes conservative policy and appoints conservative judges. But that alone doesn't make him a conservative. Trump is what he is, he's a big city New York liberal. That's how he was raised and that's who he is. I understand his appeal to working class whites. I get it. You'll notice that why I didn't vote for him I don't put down people who do. I live in a liberal coastal City but my family roots are in the Midwest and South. I love "flyover states", I don't have disdain for them like many of my neighbors do.

But Trump's populism is not conservatism.

Your points are well taken, but my main thrust is the comparison between Reagan and Trump isn’t as outlandish as it would have sounded two years ago. At minimum, there’s an argument to be made for it.

Bush II should keep his thoughts to himself.

Trump is non-ideological..I applaude that. I'm sick and tired of L vs R wars over nothing.

Get it done is all I care about

:rofl2::rofl2: When you have "W" Laughing at your Ass ... that's BAD!

Former President George W. Bush often jokes that President Trump's administration makes his own former White House team look "pretty good," according to a Republican source.

The former Republican president regularly knocks the current administration, a source close to the Trump administration told National Journal, unable to understand why the White House often seems to be in chaos.

"Bush is often heard to remark, unable to stifle his trademark smirk: 'Sorta makes me look pretty good, doesn't it?' " the Journal reported.

"He's shaking his head like everyone else wondering why they can't get their act together," the source added. "He wants the guy to succeed but thinks a lot of his problems are self-inflicted."

Trump makes both Bush and Obama look like shit, Trump has accomplished more in his first year than either of their failed Presidencies accomplished their entire administrations.

GW and Obama presided over the two worst pieces of unconstitutional legislation known to our generation and you fuckers think Trump is worse??????

most of you morons deserve slavery

Oh, were they presidents? Did they have the clout and power of Reagan? Ronnie used the pulpit to run through that regularly. He did it in state of the union speeches and press conferences. Buckley was a far right winger who wrote a column and had an interesting PBS TV show, Reagan was the first to preach it. When I heard him say it, I was offended. Of course I know who they are. Do you know Reagan was president? That makes them not the same.

Buckley started National Review which was the leading conservative magazine and the leader in conservative thought. Not sure how you consider him far right unless you are so far to the left that anyone with conservative beliefs is far right.

Reagan offended you when he spoke of government being a problem not the solution? And for his belief in the power of America's private sector? I mean I can't tell you how to feel but if his rhetoric offended you it all makes sense that as not a believer in God you look to the state as your sort of God.
