Every sentient person I knew came away from that movie thinking about the risks of artificial intelligence, and about Neo and Cypher's choices - whether it would be better to live a comfortable lie, or accept a deeply painful truth. Anyone who watches the entire Matrix trilogy is confronted by the existential questions of free will vs determinism.
Those are deeply philosophical questions, whether a person recognizes that or not. And that's what set The Matrix franchise apart from Lost in Space, Alien vs. Predator, and other sci fi productions
