I have never actually seen The Matrix
Almost all the great movies, books, and literature are pregnant with the important existential issues of human experience. Free will, artificial intelligence, freedom, truth, reality, equality, technology, moral ambiguity, the nature of good and evil and whether it objectively exists, etc.Even older are Homer's stories with the same questions and ideas.
Given human beings have been telling fireside stories for up to 300,000 years, and more likely only about 190,000 years, that's still a lot more time for fireside Darwinism than our last 10,000 years of "civilization". Like all animals, we have base natures, many of which we share with them...especially when threatened....or retarded. I'm still trying to figure it out.
You're a Christian skeptic but Perry is the funny type that is afraid of God even while denying God exists. Weird.

There has been a lot of great science fiction made in the last 40 years, Blade Runner, Independence Day, Contact, The Matrix, Interstellar, Arrival, Avatar to name a few.MAGAts and other mental defectives cannot be swayed by logic or facts. They blind themselves to only see what they want. It's an emotionally driven POV lacking the insights of human higher reasoning abilities.
In short, all of these poor souls are on the backside of human intelligence. The reasons vary: genetics, disease, injury and age being the most common. They live in fear of the unknown. Sad. Worse, they are too cowardly to fix their own problems. They'd rather hurt others to save themselves. Another reason why I know they are evil.
Those around them know best on how to help them. Not that these poor unfortunates recognize it, hence why they spread their fear-based angers and hatreds towards innocent people. They have evil hearts, but I think it's because their souls are tortured. Weird but true.
Perry is prime example of such a poor, tortured soul. Sad.

Literature, movies, books are where we are going to read and make contact with the important and interesting existential and philosophical questions of the human experience. Only a small minority of people are going to sit through a college philosophy or political science class.

I didn't think Blade Runner, Independence Day, Contact, Interstellar, Arrival, or Avatar to be good films. At least the Matrix series could conveniently set aside the bad physics as simply 'part of the Matrix'.
Not many films even approach the subject of phenomenology. The Matrix certainly did, though, particularly in the first one.
A couple of the original Star Trek episodes did as well.

Normal, regular people have been talking about the risks of technology, artifical intelligence, free will, and whether it's better to live a comfortable lie or accept a painful truth since The Terminator and The Matrix.
You don't need a PhD in philosophy to be aware of these topics. Auto mechanics are aware of these issues.
That's why bartenders and cab drivers spoke of The Matrix as being a mind fuck. They were aware of the existential issues being broached.
The real story here is that you believe normal existential topics of the human experience are so deep and impenetrable only people in the Harvard philosophy department are capable of understanding them.
