Current GOP reaction to Afghanistan reminds me of same w/ Benghazi

Every life lost is an incredible tragedy.

But why is it that Republicans get to start absolutely massive, decades-long messes like Iraq and Afghanistan, where there are almost countless casualties & refugees, and that's all fine. But when Dems try to clean things like that up, and there are - by comparison - very minimal casualties, those are suddenly impeachable offenses and create calls for the President to resign?

Afghanistan is one of the most unstable countries in the world. We were never riding out of there on the backs of unicorns without any challenges, casualties or stragglers. That wasn't going to happen.

Biden ended an unwinnable war. He got us out of their quick, and the #'s they were able to evacuate are absolutely staggering. Fox & the rest can lead the anti-Biden hot takes (and yes, we know exactly what their take would be if Trump had done the same) - but history will give what happened its proper due.

The calls for impeachment from the same crowd that was all-in on invading Iraq is an almost incomprehensible disconnect from reality & basic self-awareness. It was the same with Benghazi.

The invasion was never justified. Wrong from the start.

actually, a year ago if you had said we are going to get all our troops out, plus airlift 70,000 others, afghani and american, and lose 13 soldiers to one terrorist getting close to them and blowing himself up, most repubs would have said that would be a great ending.

For sh*ts and giggles, if the exact same events took place but Trump was President do you think progressives would be saying "God Bless President Trump, We Have Peace in America!" I don't. And yeah, I'm sure if these exact same events took place under Trump there would be people on the right not blaming Trump and calling for his resignation but saying it was the Deep State's fault etc.

Partisans are going to partisan. But not every group, magazine, individual is an American political partisan. And respected publications, even one's who backed Biden, have called him out for the disaster of our exit. President's aren't perfect. Even the best of them fvck up. I get it's hard to acknowledge when it's someone you support but it's just reality.

If Trump did the same, w/ the same results, he would have said that it was the greatest withdrawal and evacuation in history, and that the world has never seen anything so successful. And every single person on the right would have parroted that.

The left wouldn't have praised Trump - but they sure wouldn't be too critical of ending a war. And no way would they have called for his impeachment.

If you desire to end this war, and Trump did what Biden did, why wouldn't you praise Trump? Either you want the war over or you don't right? Or do you only want the war over if it's done by someone you support?

This isn't my first rodeo, I know how politics and partisans work. But if you're trying to argue a position of principle it shouldn't matter who does it right?

It took you this long to figure this out? And ask the Trumpanzees if Ashli Babbit was breaking into the Benghazi embassy with the same intent she had at the Capitol, would it have been okay with them. I've asked but no response.

Our NATO allies -not just Republicans- say Biden screwed up big time
But keep trying to put lipstick on that pig

Did you expect that we'd get out of Afghanistan perfectly? That we wouldn't incur losses, & would get every single individual out?

There is no pig. It's all just hot takes from armchair QB's.

What you say is generally true but some things are indefensible regardless of who does them. Had Trump walked away for Bagram or left our citizens there to be hostages—I don’t know what I’d say. Maybe I’d just be real quiet.

The idea that democrats wouldn’t impeach Trump had he presided over the ‘withdrawal’ is laughable. They impeached him for *a phone call* that harmed literally no one or anything.

Again - if Trump had done it, he would have said history had never seen anything so successful. And you'd be posting here every day saying the same.

you idiot.
a planned withdrawal would have not let the bottleneck at Kabul. we would have evac thru Bagram instead.
we left Americans, weapons, uniforms and hi teach gear because Biden wanted a photo op for 9-11

As soon as you throw out "idiot," you concede.

You have no credibility on this, anyway. You have reversed your position endlessly when it comes to war & committing forces.

But you know what? It’s academic because Trump didn’t do all of that—and there’s no reason to think he would have.

Yup, it was supposed to be a big victory on 9-11.

But I get the idea they’ll be talking about something else.

WHICH WAS ANOTHER DISGRACE BIDEN WAS INVOLVED IN...AND?

I'll just speak for myself here. I voted for Bush twice. I supported going into Iraq in 2003. I remember when it wasn't going well that I still supported it and I know it was a psychological thing, if I acknowledged it wasn't going well then that reflected poorly on me having supported it. I don't think I'm unique in that sense however to how we react to actions of politicians we voted for.

As to your last paragraph, I LOL'd a bit myself after reading his comment. I can picture him saying "we wanted to impeach him for a lot of things but we would have given him a pass here..."

Yup, I made the same mistake with Iraq and it had much to do with my distrust of the IC and it was further eroded under Trump.

The Ukraine impeachment happened on the heels of the collapse of the Mullet investigation. THAT was supposed to take out the Mean Tweeter. When it didn’t, democrats started getting desperate because they had little confidence they could beat him in an election—before Covid. So they found a weasel-whistle blower to snitch on Trump’s call with the Ukrainian leader—and bingo, impeachment.

Then almost literally on the heels of Democrat’s second failed attempt to remove Trump—Covid happened. And yes, it’s hard not to wonder about it.
