Homicides top cause of ‘unexpected’ childhood deaths in Baltimore

The leading cause of “unexpected or unusual” death among children in Baltimore is homicide, a tragic conclusion of the latest five-year report from city officials that explores how children die.

There were 208 such deaths among children under age 18 in the latest period ending in 2020, and the majority were among Black residents and other nonwhite groups, according to the Child Fatality Review Report.

A panel of officials led by the health department have long met to discuss the circumstances of each death, and the report is the sum of the panel’s conclusions.

About the time Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. George Gascón held a conference last month touting criminal justice reforms in his first year in office, the headlines were full of sensational crime.

We had a spate of smash-and-grab thefts, follow-home robberies, a rising murder tally.

In his own review of his first year in office, Gascón touts that juveniles are no longer being charged as adults, that he has eliminated many sentencing enhancements that contribute to “mass incarceration,” that he has ended cash bail for nonviolent felony offenses and that he is diverting misdemeanors associated with substance abuse, poverty and mental illness out of the criminal justice system.

Those reforms, along with opposition to the death penalty, are the essence of what Gascón campaigned on.

Defendants who in the past were sentenced to death or life without possibility of parole are being sentenced instead to 25 years in prison, which means that in 20 years they’re eligible for parole.

Adding to critics’ arsenal of complaints was a story by Los Angeles Times staffer James Queally about the light sentence in the case of a 26-year-old woman who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl.

“The investment on prisons is not a good one,” Gascón said.

A quadruple shooting in East Baltimore on Wednesday night left three people dead, including a Safe Streets worker, and one person injured, police said.

Three others were injured in separate shootings in West and South Baltimore.

At about 7:25 p.m., Eastern District patrol officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 2400 block of E. Monument St. Once there, officers located four men suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

A 28-year-old man was pronounced dead on the scene. Medics transported three other victims to area hospitals, where a 24-year-old man and another man were also pronounced dead.

Manhattan Rite Aid pharmacy closing after rash of thefts

That’s the word from workers and patrons of a popular Manhattan branch of the drug store chain who say the pharmacy is shutting its doors for good next month because of a rash of thefts.

The days are numbered at Rite Aid’s Eighth Ave. and W. 50th St. location.

The 24-hour store and pharmacy is scheduled to fill its last prescription on Feb. 8, and the community is already mourning its loss.

“Yeah, they stole a lot,” said one disappointed employee. “Now people can’t shop in their own neighborhood.”

A corporate spokesman, Jeff Olson, said “Like all retail businesses, we regularly review each of our locations to ensure we are meeting the needs of our customers, communities and overall business. A decision to close a store is one we take very seriously, and is in response to business conditions and viability specific to that store. It is not an indication of Rite Aid’s business as a whole; as a matter of fact, we’re eager to grow in markets we serve.”
