Dr. El-Sayed signaled on Saturday that Ms. Stevens was not welcome at his campaign events, two people with knowledge of the situation said. The day before Ms. Stevens had demanded in an open letter that he disavow what she described as an antisemitic ad from an outside group. Dr. Abdul El-Sayed just said that Representative Haley Stevens, his vanquished Democratic primary rival in Michigan’s Senate race, should not come to the Detroit church service he was planning to attend Sunday with Representative James E. Clyburn of South Carolina.

“I don’t want any distractions,” El-Sayed told reporters after a campaign rally in Sterling Heights, a Macomb County suburb. “It seems as though other folks are interested in making this race about things that it’s not about.”
