Do the humanities need a rebrand?

Acampora: Critical thinking is a complex nexus of analytical and emotional capabilities – understanding how to change your mind, manage attention and conflict, avoid distraction, deal with uncertainty, and discern ambiguity. Naming where the human value-add lies is critical when machines can replicate routine tasks.

Jones: How do you counter the narrative that going to college isn’t worth the investment, or that it’s a financial risk?

Acampora: I’d encourage people to look at the data, which strongly show college-educated workers fare better than those without a degree, almost universally across fields of study. They make more money, have better health outcomes, and live longer. From a holistic lifespan perspective, college is worth it.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh the Humanities!

LMAO its a legitimate question. I know you're aching to have people recognize the "value" of a humanities education. You want to hear a good joke? Sure you do! Whats the difference between a humanities degree and a large pepperoni pizza?
You can eat the pizza.
You tend to starve on a humanities degree.

Acampora: Critical thinking
Well, you just failed here, Hugo.
is a complex nexus of analytical and emotional capabilities
Random words ignored.
– understanding how to change your mind,
Just change it. It ain't hard.
manage attention and conflict,
You miserably fail here too, Hugo.
avoid distraction,
Another of your failures, Hugo.
deal with uncertainty,
Ever play poker? How about investing in the stock market? How about predicting the weather next week?
and discern ambiguity.
Well, you failed miserably here as well, Hugo.
Naming where the human value-add lies is critical when machines can replicate routine tasks.
A human being is not a task.
A human being builds the machines.
A human being sets the machine into motion.

I have told this story at least once at JPP but I will say it again.....I have in recent years heard from many who went to literature programs at university because they love reading and/or writing......want to learn more about it and get better at it.....and were crushed to find out that this is not what literature programs are for this deeply into the crash.

What is done is that they are taught to take blocks of text (NOT entire works) and break them down to show how the author and the West are flawed.....they are taught that if they enjoy reading old stuff then they are flawed......they should read just enough of the canon to understand why it should all be flushed.

Yeah but they think they're really smot

Well said. That was certainly a spectacular wreck.

Several factors contributed to the disaster.

1. an aft hydrogen bag was leaking. They were already having trouble keeping the tail up.
2. the ship was landing in a storm with electrical activity present (lightning and heavy rain in the area).
3. the construction isolated the hydrogen bag from the outer envelope and from the metal framing. A small gap along the top created this isolation.
4. dropping the wet mooring lines instantly grounded the ship. Because of the isolation, the metal frame was grounded, but the envelope was not.
5. a series of sparks developed between the envelop and the metal structure along the top due to the difference in voltage that suddenly appeared. One of these ignited the leaking hydrogen.
6. the crew cabin and passenger cabins were mounted underneath, meaning they crashed to the ground first, following by a giant burning bag of hydrogen and hot steel collapsing on top of them.

Like most disasters of this type, quite a few factors had to line up perfectly for the accident to happen.

Actually, we were.

Yeah, last time I dealt with a dude who had just gotten a Bachelor's Degree, he fucked up the entire 2nd floor of the Sarasota County courthouse.
Not good times going around and fixing what that idiot fucked up.
It got done, though. Me and a black dude did that. He may have been let go, but nothing was ever said to him overtly.
Yeah, it was like that.
That was the plan. We quietly went around and fixed all his fuckups on who knows how many the fuck of square feet in a building.
2nd floor of the Sarasota Courthouse. He fucked up all of it. All of it.
Thank God they stopped him from going to another floor, too, because there were more.
The last college educated mechanical engineer I came across didn't know how to operate a drill press. He was having a hell of a time trying drill a hole in a plastic box, and never realized the drill press was on reverse.

Not true. A caricature. And I doubt you know anyone who went to college.

I happen to know quite a few. I also happen to know that a lot of them still can't read or write properly and don't even understand fairly simple words. They deny many theories of science. They don't understand many branches of mathematics including statistical math, random number math, probability math, or even algebra. They never learned anything about logic or philosophy at all.

You're one of them, Hugo.

A lot of it's pointless garbage.
LLM's have proven that studying language is very important. History is always important to understanding the future. Art is one of our major exports. Understanding foreign cultures helps us understand the world.

Greek Mythology and Philosophy.
Very few humanities students study Greek anymore. Let's talk about studying another foreign language, say Pashto. It is a major language of Afghanistan. Understanding it would be important to understanding the sources of terrorism. You do realize that terrorists rarely translate their plans into English to help us understand them?

Or just understanding Chinese culture to help us export consumer goods to them.

College degrees are not for everyone. Many are better suited for technical education whether it be in industry or medicine. They will have less student indebtedness and good earning power.
The teaching students less theory of education falls apart because we do not know what will earn well in the future for every individual. We teach students a large number of things, and if they are not useful, we have at least taught the students how to learn.

Is money everything?
Apple has made a huge amount of money off Jobs having studied fonts in college. None of us saw the importance in that, but it turned out to be important.

I still remember that damn class. Some people in there I'd been seeing for over decade.
Didn't like all of them. Younger brother of some guys from the neighborhood, he was cool.
I can probably still name all his brothers. Then the albino nigger from across town, I never liked that motherfucker.
He's lucky he didn't charge out into that field where we whipped all their asses. :rofl2:
A friend of a guy I kicked the everloving shit out of and almost killed, he was in that class, too.
Pieces of shit all. The black dude with the brothers was cool, though, and a few other girls in there. It was what it was.
The class was shit, the curriculum was shit.
The Prof was an atheist.
Are you having a stroke?

There are several examples of people that never graduated from college that make far more money in their lifetime than any college graduate.

Bill Gates.
Steve Balmer.
Michael Faraday.
Thomas Edison.
...are just a few.
Ballmer graduated from Harvard. Jobs attended Harvard and credits there education for a lot... INCLUDING MEETING BALLMER WHO GRADUATED FROM HARVARD!!!

Faraday and Edison lived in the 1800's.

Coincidentally there's a good article in the NYTimes today :

A College-by-College Guide to Which Majors Pay Off — or Don’t

You can select a major , no school, and get expected earnings after 4 yrs., select a school and no major - get expected earnings, select a school and a major - get expected earnings.
Not surprising humanities' earnings were so far down the list that I gave up looking.
