End of the line for noted traitor Robert E Lee

When you open fire on American soldiers (Fort Sumter) , declare yourself an independent nation, and raise an insurrectionist militia, you are just going to have to expect a military response from the United States.

The State of Mississippi's official Declaration of Seccesion clearly says the primary issue they were fighting for was the right to enslave millions of humans.

Getting back to your original claim - you said the Gettysburg Battlefield should not be associated with a broader educational purpose about the values and moral principles underlying the battle.

One of our greatest presidents -Abraham Lincoln - disagreed with you. He made crystal clear in his Gettysburg address that the true meaning of Gettysburg was all about the principles and values the North was fighting for - freedom and preservation of our great Union

Oh, bullshit. But you're the sole authority on the Civil War, so you can have the last word. Just don't come up here to Gettysburg to tear down our monuments, you just might get a taste of lead from one of those guns with "military ballistics." In fact, a number of our loads exceed those "military ballistics."

Why was the Battle of Gettysburg fought by Confederates? To preserve slavery for themselves.

I am conflicted about the outcome of the Civil War.

I of course celebrate Emancipation, but am not happy about the Confederate states remaining part of our nation.
They're a huge anchor on our ass.

Look it up...if you can.

Everything in the Civil War ties back to slavery. It was the cause of the war. The states who seceded made special mention of it in their articles of secession and constitutions. To pretend otherwise is to erase history, and I know how much you loathe that.

Loathe history? I'm not one who wants to destroy all monuments related to the South during the Civil War.

No, loathe the erasing of history. By pretending that the Civil War was fought for other reasons than slavery, you are erasing the history of the Civil War.

And how does a statue teach history when a book does not?

You like the statues solely because they glorify people with whom you share the same values.

Read some facts on the Civil War. Slavery was just at the top of the list why the South wanted to break away from the Union.

Slavery was the sole reason. And are those "facts" on the plaques of the monuments and statues? No. They're not.

Those monuments serve as a virtue signal to racists; it's glorification of people with abhorrent values. So I get why you are so screechy whiny about tearing them down.

I will leave with the knowlege that I have given you a few things to think about:

Gettysburg was not a valiant duel between two sides both fighting for honorable causes

As President Lincoln himself articulated- the values the United States American soldiers were fighting for were freedom and preservation of the Union.

The Confederate States of America were fighting the right to enslave humans, and openly stated so themselves.

I personally enjoy the Gettysburg Memorial. But any attempt to portray the values American soldiers were fighting for, on equal footing with the values Confederate militia were fighting for is a profoundly dishonest distortion of history.

And it is a severe disservice to the United States American soldiers who served under our flag, and gave their lives to preserve the Union.

you conflate the cause to the battlefield -honorable men all on both sides

We are making progress here. Now we are virtually all in agreement that the causes and values soldiers of the Confederate States of America were fighting for were dishonorable and immoral.

Wars and battles ultimately come down to values. There undoubtedly were honorable men fighting in the German wehrmacht and the Japanese imperial army.

The Gettysburg Memorial I remember does a poor job placing this battle in its proper context and representing the values which underlay this conflict.

I think that is a disservice to the United States American soldiers who died there. I am pretty sure they were crystal clear about the values the United States Army was fighting for

I never ever said the civil war wasn't about slavery -oh sure there were ancillary reasons like states rights and why
Lee decided to take command of the virginia army. But it was about slavery first and foremost

But Gettysburg is also about the reconcilliation of those same soldiers.
I've posted account and pics of both sides shaking hands at the high-water mark of the Confederacy- Cemetery Ridge.

The nation healed its wounds, the men made peace, and monuments went up to the great men.

Until we decided to reopen the wound and tear off the scabs.. for what exactly?
We have a bad habit of never settling our history -just like we re-litigate everything over and over (i suppose)

I don't understand why northerners, and modern day southerners take it so personally when the moral degeneracy of the slave-nation known as the Confederate States of America gets raked over the coals.

Why take it so personally? You are neither Confederates nor slave owners.

Why would you assume when the legacy of Confederate rebels gets tarnished it is somehow an attack on you?

My great grandfather fought for the North, and under the same circumstances, I would too. Ponder that...

So tell us, what does Christopher Columbus has to do with our Civil War? Why are they destroying his memorials?
I've asked this before, yet no snowflakes answered. Why? Because you want something to get violent about?

completely by-passing my post on reconcilliation back then-
to today's opening up un-necessary wound for one of your rants
