Dems accused Republicans of being religious extremists in the 1850s. It would be refreshing if they would update their talking points every hundred years or so.

Those were CONSERVATIVE Democrats attacking LIBERAL Republicans, you didn’t really think they were called the Radical Republicans cause they were conservative did you?

Let me add another little known fact to the thread, ... State officials were able to dictate, control and interpret religion for their own political purposes. There was no protected freedom of religion rights at the State level before the 14th amendment.

The GOP has always been a conservative party. The Dems evolved from Jacksonian/Bryan populism to Wilsonian/New Deal/New Left progressivism, and have thus been an illiberal party since the Jacksonians severed themselves from the Jeffersonians.
