"The House voted to hold Attorney General William Barr and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in criminal contempt on Wednesday, escalating a battle between the Trump administration and congressional Democrats.

The measure holds the Trump Cabinet members in contempt for defying subpoenas for documents on their since-abandoned efforts to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census. The chamber approved the measure in a party-line vote of 230-198, with four Democrats joining all Republicans in voting against the resolution.

Democrats argued the measure was necessary to hold officials accountable for “obstruction & oppose efforts to undermine the census.” It passed the House Oversight and Reform Committee along party lines ahead of the July Fourth recess.

“The resolution that's before us today is about protecting our democracy. ... It is about protecting the integrity of this body — it's bigger than the census. It's about protecting the integrity of the Congress of the United States of America,” Oversight and Reform Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) said on the floor.

“We need to understand how and why the Trump administration tried to add a question based on pretext so we can consider reforms to ensure this never happens again,” he said."

Trey Gowdy: 'Nobody cares what Congress does ... The House doesn't matter anymore'
"Barr is ostensibly being held in contempt for not turning over documents he has no legal obligation to turn over. In fact, it would be against the law to do so," Gowdy said on "The Story with Martha MacCallum."
Gowdy said contempt of Congress didn't matter after Tuesday, when Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi violated House rules.
"Nobody cares what Congress does. What we saw yesterday -- they can't even enforce their own House rules against their own members. So, there used to be a stigma attached to being held in contempt of Congress. There ain't no more," Gowdy said. "So, I would tell Bill Barr, 'Your reputation as an incredible lawyer is intact. Don't give it another thought.'"
"Congress has worked itself into obscurity [and] irrelevance. When you can go on the floor of the House as the presidents say 'I'm going to do it with or without you,' and Congress stands up and cheers, you have rendered that branch of government feckless and irrelevant," Gowdy said. Oh, you already know that answer. We all do. Republicans vote Holder in contempt and it's big news. Democrats hold Barr AND ROSS in contempt and it is immediately scrolled off the news by chants of hatred.

You know there is a big distinction between calling the president a racist and calling what he said to be 'racist remarks.'
