IMO, it's more about a large number of people individually reacting to social stress factors and using a common socially-acceptable outlet to relieve the stress factors.
In the US, as a nation, we are going through multiple transitions. One is from "The Leader of the Free World" to "A leader of the Free World".
Another is human society still adapting to using Information Tech, specifically the Internet. Most JPP members are old enough to remember when the Internet didn't exist and also to remember when their Aunt or Uncle kept forwarding emails of conspiracy theories. IMO, too many Americans lack Critical Thinking skills and, therefore, become overwhelmed by the mass influx of competing or opposing ideas.
Another, that we've been living with since the 1950s, is a global apocalypse but as each generation comes of age instances come up reminding them that we are all facing death from factors beyond our control. A school shooting is tame compared to war or nuclear annihilation, but it's still terrifying to parents and children alike. Part of this is a product of the Information Age: instant communications. There are about 50 million students and 3.6 million teachers in the US. Every year about 120 students die in fatal school bus crashes alone...but no one gives a shit except the parents of the dead. OTOH, has some kid show up with a BB gun and put out some eyes and it's a National fucking Crisis.
IMO, that's an example of information overload producing stupid results. Inappropriate priorities. FWIW, every year over 9,000 US kids don't make it through the year. Perspective is a step in understanding and using critical thinking.

They lack the ability to discern between facts and opinions.
That stems from a combination of [depression/low self-esteem] and peer-pressure. Other like-minded people provide support for wrong beliefs, so that makes it easier to justify them.
It is a self-fulfilling loop. The world is a scary place. It is a challenge to know lots of scary things and still enjoy life. There is a tendency to shut out the scary things, avoid being well-informed. Hence, the very common sentiment that the news is 'all bad.' If the news is all bad, and watching it causes depression, then don't watch it. But that is doing oneself a disservice, being purposely uninformed, so perhaps the way around that is to acquire a sanitized version of the news in the form of rumors and social media. Friends and contacts are more trusted than the main stream media, so this seems logical.
Talk pundits take advantage of this. They offer a sort of entertainment that purports to explain the news as 'a friend.' But talk pundits are not friends. They are in business to make money. And the way people like Tucker Carlson make money is to generate great viewership. And the way he does that is by appealing to emotions. Acting as 'a sensible voice in the world of craziness.' He appeals to a sense of right and wrong, always portraying an 'enemy' as doing something very wrong, and we, the good people, are righteously alarmed at whatever construed harm has been done.
It is a victimhood act. We, the good people (he and his views) are alarmed at what they the bad people (liberals) are doing to we the good people.
It is a dividing tactic that hits emotional appeal, and serves to scare people. Scared people are more susceptible to advertising, so the advertising become more effective. corporations sell product, get lots of money, and pay Tucker Carlson and Fox big money. The motivation is profit. The Fox viewers are mere pawns in the profit game.
Tucker Carlson is worth $30 million. How many of his viewers are? Tucker acts like they all have so much in common, but they don't. Tucker Carlson is an elite.
The loop is absurd. People wanting to avoid the scary-sounding news listen to Tucker Carlson, who scares them just as badly. They are right back where they started.

My guess is that it takes a lot of time to be properly informed, and they are too busy working lousy jobs, feeling bad from it, trying to raise a family, make ends meet, and still carve out a little personal fun time.
Busy day after busy day and all of a sudden a body is feeling left out of 'being in the know.' How could they possibly find an hour each day to watch the news??? And if they do, are they watching the right one. PBS or BBC would be good choices. The commercial ones are more slanted.
There would be a sense of guilt that sets in, and dovetails in with any personal insecurity to produce depression and lack of self-esteem. A feeling that others are in control, and all that is possible for them is to just make it through, week after week. Remember, 3/4 of America lives paycheck to paycheck with little savings.
Isn't it easier to just talk a little on the job or with friends and simply accept what they say? There ya go. The pieces of the rumor mill are all in place.
It is all laid out for Americans to have a very full life without being politically aware of what's really happening in the country and why.
They are not bad people. They are simply doing their best to get by.

He knows what works. He is going to use what works and he is going to refine his approach to make it better. He is at the top of his game. No way he would ever consider running for office. He's got far more control over the country right now, right from where he sits. He created the whole CRT nonsense. Now, lawmakers are making laws about his propaganda! He did that. What power. He's on an ego trip of his own.
He set the whole tone and agenda for the Republican Party of the United States.
