The fear of their own mortality can drive people towards unbounded stupidity, and there will always be unscrupulous leaders who will be willing to take advantage of that aspect of human shortcomings..
It is a human frailty and failing that needs to be overcome.
Trump is another one of those unscrupulous leaders IMHO.
