Vice President JD Vance used the word “celebrate” when referring to the upcoming 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks during a speech in Sterling Heights, Michigan, on August 31, 2026. He then immediately corrected himself.

Multiple outlets and circulating clips report the same sequence. Vance said something to the effect of: “We’re about to celebrate the 25th year … or commemorate the 25th year of those terrible terrorist attacks and celebrate all the brave heroes who made it, frankly, as terrible as it was, it could have been so much worse.”

He applied “celebrate” first to the anniversary itself, caught the wording mid-sentence and switched to “commemorate,” then used “celebrate” again when talking about first responders and others who acted that day. The initial phrasing spread quickly on social media and drew criticism that 9/11 is a day of remembrance, not celebration.

Vance is scheduled to represent the administration at the New York commemoration; President Trump is expected at the Pentagon. The remark was a verbal slip he corrected on the spot, not a prepared statement that the country should “celebrate” the attacks.
