Leftists are all really unlucky when it comes to thinking.
Luck has nothing to do with it.
You see, in a world where the stupid and weak died out, there were far fewer defectives.
1. Pre-modern “culling” of the stupid and weak
High mortality did remove many individuals who were frail, disabled, or less robust. Infant and child mortality was extremely high for most of human history: roughly 25–30% of newborns died in the first year and nearly half before adulthood across hunter-gatherer, ancient, and pre-industrial societies. Infectious disease, malnutrition, injury, and congenital conditions selected against physical weakness. Some epidemics (e.g., Black Death) also disproportionately killed the already frail.
But with the rise of modern medicine and improved hygiene in the 19th century, they are not being culled naturally anymore.
2. 19th-century medicine and hygiene
From the mid-to-late 19th century onward, sanitation (sewers, clean water), pasteurization, better infant feeding practices, and later vaccines and antibiotics produced steep declines in infant and child mortality. In Western Europe and the U.S., rates that had been 150–300+ per 1,000 live births fell dramatically by the early 20th century. People who would previously have died of infection, diarrhea, or birth complications now survived into adulthood and reproduced.
This is a classic relaxation of natural selection against certain physical and immunological vulnerabilities.
Then women were allowed to vote, and their illogical empathy caused widespread societal damage.
Women gained national voting rights in most Western countries between the 1890s and 1920s (New Zealand 1893, U.S. 1920, UK full equality 1928, many European countries around WWI/post-WWI). Empirical studies find that suffrage was associated with subsequent increases in social spending. One analysis of Western European countries (1869–1960) estimated short-run rises in social spending of 0.6–1.2% of GDP and larger long-run effects. Similar patterns appear in U.S. state-level data and other cases.
Women as a group have, on average, shown higher support for redistributive and protective social policies in many surveys and voting patterns.
In fact, if you examine the rise of the welfare state that incentivizes and enables the survival of the witless and weak, you'll observe the rise of leftism, IMO.
4. Welfare state, survival of the “witless and weak,” and leftism
The modern welfare state expanded substantially in the 20th century, especially after the 1930s–1960s in most Western countries. It does reduce mortality and hardship for people with low cognitive ability, chronic illness, disability, or poor impulse control by providing income support, healthcare, housing, and other transfers. This is an effect of the safety net.
The chronological overlap between suffrage, welfare growth, and the rise of social-democratic/left parties is real. Causation is multi-factorial: economic development, demographic change, organized labor, elite responses to unrest, and ideological shifts all contributed. The welfare expansion is well-supported historically.
Left-leaning parties and ideologies have generally been more supportive of expansive welfare systems than right-leaning ones.
