Do you think the purpose of the Constitution is to expand freedoms or to restrict freedoms? The government does neither. The Constitution is designed to protect our rights from abuse by the government.

Marriage isn't a right so arguing from that standpoint invalidates your argument. There's nothing authoritarian about allowing the level of government to which the Constitution indicates has authority over marriage to deal with it. Hate to break it to you but it's not the federal government. If you don't agree, show me where the Constitution gives the federal government delegated authority over marriage. I can show you where it clearly indicates that States have such authority.
