Plenty of candidates in my opinion, why is Bill Bruford never mentioned? Ginger Baker was a trained jazz drummer who had huge respect for Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa. Keith Moon was an enthusiastic basher, who couldn't keep time, but it worked for the Who as Pete Townshend was the timekeeper. John Bonham was a master drummer, never missed a beat and was just brilliant working off against Jimmy Page. Listen to Kashmir as an example of that.
