The housing example I offered is of course not unique to San Francisco, but I spoke to it specifically because I live here and have had to deal with it professionally.

But I also spoke to it because a very very high percentage of the people fighting this housing density will tell you climate change is an existential crisis. That's what I'm trying to understand from your perspective. These aren't people who need convincing of the importance of dealing with climate change.

But when it comes to their neighborhood and quality of life, that trumps the science. And of course our local politicians will all say climate change is an existential crisis but these people fighting density are the ones who elect them to office, so they have their own incentives they respond to.

Still not a real example if they see themselves as an enlightened minority whose sacrifice would be meaningless in a world that goes blundering on.

At the end of the day if some of the people who most strongly believe climate change is an existential threat aren't willing to accept policies to address it when it affects them personally, that seems like a pretty significant challenge.

Ok, so what should be done?

I gave the example of housing density around public transportation as a policy way to get people out of their cars and helping to stop sprawl, but even people who say climate change is an existential crisis will fight against it if its in their neighborhood.

That's just one example of course but it shows the challenge of what we're dealing with.

What needs to be done is to listen to the science and let the experts work. I am not an expert.

That said I would say wind, solar, and nuclear is what should be receiving funds, not more drilling.
