While a bit odd, ranked choice has merit. It doesn't typically bode well for third party candidates, but it adds another layer to the election to assure that the winner has the confidence of the majority of the electorate. It keeps third party candidates from handing the election to a somewhat unpopular candidate.
It prevents split-party votes. If we had ranked voting in 1992, Bush would have won. If we had it in 2000, Gore would have won. If we had it in 2016, I suspect Hillary would have won.
