Pfizer Inc. PFE, +2.65% said Tuesday it could have a coronavirus vaccine ready for use on an emergency basis in the fall if it proves to work safely in testing.

Testing of the vaccine, which has already started in Germany, could start in the U.S. as early as next week if health regulators sign off, Pfizer Chief Executive Albert Bourla said in an interview. Results from the study could come as early as next month, Mr. Bourla said.

Pfizer would need to do more testing to make sure the vaccine works safely. If all testing proves successful, Pfizer could start distributing the vaccine on an emergency basis in the fall and receive approval for widespread distribution by year’s end, Mr. Bourla said.

“This is a crisis right now, and a solution is desperately needed by all,” Mr. Bourla said.

Trump had nothing to do with this; your own link says it was the Germans:

And Obama had a vaccine for H1N1 within 6 months.

October would be about nine months from the first US case.

Corona virus is a much more difficult vaccine then a flu -why the SARS vaccine was never finished

Using synthetic mRNA technology can enable the vaccine to be developed and manufactured more quickly than traditional vaccines, the companies said.

Pfizer said last week it expects to make safety data on the vaccine available by late May.

The trial will initially aim to test different dosing regimens of four potential vaccine candidates on around 360 healthy volunteers divided into a younger cohort and a group of seniors.

The trial will expand to more subjects after researchers determine which compounds and dosing regimens are most effective, said Kirsten Lyke, a director at the University of Maryland’s Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, which is participating in the trial.

Doses have already been administered to some volunteers at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Pfizer plans to expand the trial to sites across the United States in early July, and may ultimately enroll more than 8,000 participants, a company spokeswoman said.

If successful, the U.S. clinical trial would be one of the fastest ever progressions of a vaccine from early-stage studies to regulatory approval, compressing a development process that often takes as much as a decade to just over 9 months.

“This is the equivalent of doing phases one, two and three of a typical clinical trial but all compressed into the May through October time frame,” Lyke said.

BioNTech is producing the vaccine for the trials in its European manufacturing facilities. Pfizer is investing in developing its own manufacturing capacity for the vaccine, and is preparing sites in Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, and Belgium to begin producing it.

Both companies will jointly commercialize the vaccine, if approved.

So....its not a hoax, then? It's not "just the flu", then? It won't "disappear in April", then?

These are all things you said.

Great if they do- BUT I'LL BELIEVE IT WHEN I SEE IT!

There's no proof of this.

The Trump administration is organizing a Manhattan Project-style effort to drastically cut the time needed to develop a coronavirus vaccine, with a goal of making enough doses for most Americans by year’s end.

Called “Operation Warp Speed,” the program will pull together private pharmaceutical companies, government agencies and the military to try to cut the development time for a vaccine by as much as eight months, according to two people familiar with the matter.

As part of the arrangement, taxpayers will shoulder much of the financial risk that vaccine candidates may fail, instead of drug companies.

Date that you left out: April 29th.

Why didn't this start in January or February? Because at that point, you were still calling this a hoax.

This might be very lucrative for Pfizer, but will it work, the big question.

A spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services, Michael Caputo, said the president refused to accept the timeline for standard vaccine development and encouraged a breakthrough process.
Speeding Up

Vaccine development is typically slow and high risk. The project’s goal is to cut out the slow part, the people said. Operation Warp Speed will use government resources to quickly test the world’s most promising experimental vaccines in animals, then launch coordinated human clinical trials to winnow down the candidates.

The project will cost billions of dollars, one of the people said. And it will almost certainly result in significant waste by making inoculations at scale before knowing if they’ll be safe and effective -- meaning that vaccines that fail will be useless. But it could mean having doses of vaccine available for the American public by the end of this year, instead of by next summer.
There are at least 70 different coronavirus vaccines in development by drugmakers and research groups, according to the World Health Organization. But drugmakers have not coordinated their efforts to the extent they could through the Warp Speed project, one of the people said.

Under the effort, the Defense Department would make its animal research resources available for pre-clinical work on vaccines.

The group is also discussing the use of what’s known as a master protocol to test the vaccines. Instead of multiple clinical trials run by each drugmaker, competing for patients and resources, the government would organize one large trial to test several vaccines at once and advance the most promising ones.

t’s not clear how much of Operation Warp Speed is new and how much will involve ongoing projects, such as investments made by BARDA, the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority.

BARDA has already handed out hundreds of millions of dollars to drugmakers including Moderna Inc. and Johnson & Johnson. The money is meant to fund both research and large-scale manufacturing at the same time, hopefully to accelerate vaccine production.

ROFL..you are shifting goalposts..no Trump did not call the virus a "hoax" he correctly said Dems criticism was a hoax.

I realize it sucks for you that Trump's can do attitude and dedication of resources appears to pay off-
but you're just gonna have to swallow good news for a change

So basically it's possible we have a vaccine for widespread use by the end of the year. Which isn't exactly huge news.

You're shifting goalposts, here, not me.

You're trying to pretend that Trump cared about this early on...but then you post a link that shows this news is new as of 6 days ago.

Why did he wait so long? Right, because it was a hoax and you didn't take it seriously.

I realize it sucks for you that Trump's can do attitude and dedication of resources appears to pay off-

Trump taking credit for the work German and Pfizer scientists did themselves is peak Trump.

So I guess that means if there is no vaccine by October, you'll create a new sock.

ROFL.. where the hell have you been??

this is a breakthru in time line (of course i qualify that IF it works)- it's monster news

Gadddamn I am SO GLAD I LEFT THE DEMOCRATS.
to be a Dem these days requires delusional thought and rooting against America

What has trump to do with the development of this drug. In the beginning we were told it would be about a year for a drug to appear. This is within the timeframe.
