President Trump signed documents Thursday ordering that Lake Ontario be renamed “Lake America” — as he and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney escalate their tariffs-driven trade war.

“We’re going to be changing the name of Lake Ontario, effective immediately, to Lake America,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

“We filed all the necessary papers, documents, everything else. We notified all of the various people that we have to notify. So we’ve done everything that you have to do, and this is official, effective immediately.”

Trump said that “the Canadian officials have created this very badly. They’re nasty people. They charge our farmers 400% tariffs.”

Trump previously renamed the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” last year.

“If you think about it, we have a gulf and we have a lake. Now, all we need is an ocean. So maybe we’ll have to change the name of the Atlantic and/or the Pacific,” Trump said Thursday.

Its hard to imagine from you stupid liberals because Trump is one of the most intelligent presidents we've ever had with an I.Q. of 173. That number is based on a 2026 study conducted by the University of California....not exactly a state or a Cally university that would normally ever give good news about a Republican president. The chart also shows other high I.Q. presidents are John Quincy Adams (who is a a part of my own heritage DNA line) at (186.7), Thomas Jefferson (153.7), and JFK at (160)

There is literally no possible universe that trump has an IQ of 173.

Worth noting that he speaks at an educational level of a 3rd to 6th grader, depending on the exact methodology. Best guess is his personal words are at the bottom of that scale, and the words prepared for him are at the top of that scale.

There was an myth that trump had an IQ of 73(much worse than 173), but that was false. No one knows his IQ, but it does not appear to be great.

For U.S. federal usage, yes—through the same mechanism used for Mount McKinley and the Gulf of Mexico. A president can direct the Secretary of the Interior and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN) to change the name in the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) and require federal agencies to use the new name on official maps, documents, and databases. That authority rests on 43 U.S.C. §§ 364–364f. It does not give the president power to force Canada, U.S. states, private mapmakers, or the rest of the world to adopt the name.


Shared lakes vs. Lake Michigan​


Four of the five Great Lakes (Superior, Huron, Erie, Ontario) straddle the U.S.–Canada border. Lake Michigan is the exception: it lies entirely inside the United States.


  • For a shared lake, a U.S. executive order can change only the name used by the U.S. government. Canada’s Geographical Names Board of Canada, the province of Ontario, and international usage remain unchanged. BGN policy and a 1989 U.S.–Canada understanding call for coordination on features that cross the border; a unilateral U.S. change can bypass that coordination for domestic federal purposes but does not bind the other side.
  • Treaties such as the 1909 Boundary Waters Treaty and the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement govern management and water quality, not naming. The International Joint Commission has no naming role.
  • Lake Michigan, being wholly domestic, presents fewer diplomatic obstacles. Even there the change would still be limited to federal nomenclature unless Congress acted.

Congress can also rename features by statute. Features whose names appear in specific statutes or that form part of congressionally established units are harder for the executive to alter on its own.


What an order actually accomplishes​


The pattern from 2015 (Denali), 2025 (Mount McKinley restored; Gulf of America), and today (Lake Ontario directed to “Lake America” for federal use) is consistent: the president can make the new name official inside the U.S. government. States, news organizations, Google Maps, Canada, and international charts are not required to follow. Dual names on maps are common when one country changes its domestic usage and the other does not.


So a POTUS can rename a Great Lake for federal purposes. That is real but narrow authority; it is not the power to rewrite the international or Canadian name of a shared lake.
 
Google's own map may dutifully have changed the name but every map of "The United States" that shows up on Google still has The Gulf Of Mexico, as does the world at large. Once Trump is gone you can bet his little bubbles here will go with him.
