Reagan and Nixon:recorded racist call

Evince something that happened over 40 years ago is hardly current events you twit.

These audio tapes were just released to the public, making it a current event.

Calling black people "monkeys" who barely know how to wear shoes is on the same par as calling them spear chuckers.

I really think a lot of people would be shocked to hear these blatantly racist sentiments coming out of Reagan's mouth - he is, after all, held out as the God of the conservative movement, the very embodiment of conservative values, the most popular Republican president with the GOP base, bar none.

Why would they choose to release the tapes NOW? There must be a reason, correct? Could it be to garner more support through identity politics? Why not also release LBJ comments?

Who called it a crime, you Lemming? TTQ was talking about republicans supporting policies that hurt black people. Both Clintons pushed hard for the 1994 crime bill is the point.

along with MOST of the fucking nationnasshole

I was fighting it

I REMEMBER CLEARLY

You are going to have to provide audio tapes of LBJ saying anything similar to Reagan's racist degeneracy. I am not just going to take your word for it. The internets taught me that conservatives will lie about public figures, and even other posters, without a shred of conscience.

LBJ is not held out as a God by liberals. He is not the most popular Democratic president of the century.
Reagan is held out as a conservative God and the very epitomy of what it means to be a conservative.

At least we are past any denials that Reagan was a blatant racist. For four decades, I have seen the rightwing try to explain away Reagan's welfare queen jokes. But audio tape does not lie. Reagan thought it was funny to joke about monkeys.

I may have older relatives who posess a certain kind of ethnic pride and ethnic chauvinism that was common in the early to mid 20th century. But I never heard any older relative of mine refer to blacks as monkeys, spear chuckers, or jungle bunnies..

My brother, who was a bank president in Texas, met LBJ and some of the things that LBJ said were far worse.

Most blacks, whites and greens say racist, off color stuff.

The ‘n” word is popular with blacks in Atl.

No big deal.

As recently as 2005, in his memoir, Byrd describes the KKK as a fraternal assembly of, quote, "upstanding people," end quote. He was the only senator to vote against both African-American Supreme Court nominees Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas.

He personally filibustered the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964. He opposed President Truman's initiative to integrate the Armed Forces. And he said he would never fight, quote, "with a negro by my side. Rather, I should die 1,000 times than to see this beloved land become degraded by race mongrels," end quote.

He once called Martin Luther King a, quote, "self-seeking rabble- rouser" and even told the FBI he could give a speech condemning King on the floor of the Senate, saying it was time that the civil rights leader, quote, "met his waterloo."

He also once said the writers of the Declaration of Independence did not intend for words "all men created equal" to be taken literally.

In a newly unearthed audio clip, then-California Gov. Ronald Reagan disparaged "monkeys" from African countries in a phone call with then-President Richard Nixon, according to the former director of Nixon's presidential library, who published his findings in The Atlantic.

Tim Naftali, who directed the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum from 2007 to 2011, writes that Reagan -- who would later become the 40th President of the United States -- called Nixon in October 1971, the day after the United Nations had voted to recognize the People's Republic of China. In the call, he says, Reagan is heard apparently referencing the way the Tanzanian delegation started dancing in the General Assembly when the UN took the vote to seat the delegation from Beijing instead of Taiwan.
Reagan, Naftali writes, is heard saying to Nixon, "Last night, I tell you, to watch that thing on television as I did."
Nixon interjected: "Yeah."

Reagan continued, "To see those, those monkeys from those African countries -- damn them, they're still uncomfortable wearing shoes!"
Reagan -- a devoted defender of Taiwan who despised the UN -- wanted the US to withdraw from full participation, Naftali said.
The National Archives originally released the tape of the phone call in 2000 without the racist portion, but as a researcher, Naftali said, he requested a new review of Nixon's conversations with Reagan last year. The National Archives released the complete version of the recording online two weeks ago.
In another audio clip, Naftali writes, Nixon then called then-Secretary of State William Rogers and recounted his conversation with Reagan.
"As you can imagine," Nixon told Rogers, "there's strong feeling that we just shouldn't, as (Reagan) said, he saw these ... cannibals on television last night, and he says, 'Christ, they weren't even wearing shoes, and here the United States is going to submit its fate to that,' and so forth and so on."
I was NEVER a fan of Reagan, the guy fooled others, but not I. He was a third rate actor, too.
