What I want is to recognize the plight of some people and aid in easing it.

The idea that one cannot help but "love" the "culture" of NYC sits solely in the souls of the folks that were raised there. One can go to Broadway shows without ever living there, and this idea that they are all spectacular because they are on Broadway is laughable. We've all seen Cats, we all have noticed how simple the story was and how crappy the writing was, but too many refuse to say what they think because they don't want to be called "uncultured" by the folks you want to desperately claim membership among.
Anyway, everyone can participate in the "culture" of the city, especially so if they live within driving distance of the City, such as you are in Pennsylvania, Maryland, etc.
This idea that everyone wants to live there because you do is based solely on the idea that everyone must be like you and rests only in your inability to empathize.
Anyway, NYC was not a place I would ever want to live long before I had PTSD, but with it... Drive through visits is about all I could do. Hypervigilance does not get better with more people around.
Some people would not have wanted to live in Rome during its heyday; or in Alexandria during its.

The people of NYC have a hell of a lot better and more understanding of other people in this country than hicks like you do about them.

Personally I generally do not go to the “big” shows on broadway, there are so many productions on broadway and the area that never travel, that most have never heard of, and generally are better, in my opinion than the big ones. To me the traveling production shows are not the best ones, they are the fast food of theater.
There are some people (you being one) who just cannot see that some people truly need help...and must get it. You would rather some of them not get the needed help in order to insure that NO ONE get help that is not totally neded.Yes, give a man a fish. I am of the school that says it is better that some get aid that is not entirely needed...than to have some people who truly need help not get it in order to insure that does not happen.
You have a right to your opinion...as I have mine. And frankly, I would be disgusted with myself if I ever became so insecure that I would deny anyone in need of that help. I feel anyone with any self-dignity would feel that way.
That is a major difference between us.
I tend to wait for off Broadway productions of the "big shows" if I watch them at all. I simply do not care to have a "brag" about seeing it on Broadway, and usually you can get a video of the danged thing without wasting all that time and energy (as well as cash).
I have to admit that I do like plays and musicals, but not usually the one that has become the "big show" on Broadway.
I've seen many of the "big" shows, and some are really good, some not so good, to my taste. I however do not see any correlation between big shows and being good shows. I like to see them performed live, it so much better than a movie or television.
I get disappointed when they tell me how great the show is after someone has seen it, then I go and see something like Cats... Seriously, that one was so shallow and uninteresting. It did not get better when famous people were in it either. lol.
I also like plays/musicals live over video. But the video can usually give me a good idea of whether I would think it was worth spending money on tickets.

Not comparable, and it is the same for any major sporting event, you don’t get the color nor sense the excitement, same for Broadway shows, and you show up loud and drunk there you get escorted out
The video gives me an idea if it is worth paying money to watch it live. Then I will pay for it off Broadway. It is rare when a show that got "big" on Broadway is worth it to me. I gave one of the largest examples. Cats. It sucked on Broadway, it sucked on video, it sucked off Broadway, it sucked in the movie they made of it recently with Taylor Swift in it or something... The story, the writing, everything about it sucks. It is simple, one dimensional, and just a terribly obvious story. There is nothing about it that would make it better to watch it for hundreds of dollars on Broadway, it cannot be fixed by Broadway, it simply sucked all the way down to its bones.
Now you are getting confusing, you would watch a play on film before you’d go see the actual play live? So before you would have seen say Hamilton on Broadway you would have waited for the film?
Did not see Cats on Broadway, and didn’t particularly care for it, but it was clever, and if you liked dance, you’d like it, which many apparently did given it is still running
I did. The video was enough. There was no way it was worth the amount of deneg you had to drop to watch it on Broadway.
I am not "confusing"... I told you I do not watch shows on Broadway, that if I am going to watch it live it will be off Broadway, and usually by that time you can see a video and then I would decide if I really wanted to watch it live.
It's relatively simple. Occasionally I will go to a sporting event live, to hang with fam. It is rarely worth it without them. It just costs a ton to be around people who think they've got a better view than the guys watching at home... which is almost never the truth.
