Serena Williams proves she is a liberal Nut-Bag

I thought the charge of sexism was unfortunate. Although there is clear sexism in some aspects of pro tennis, it does a disservice to the cause to lob that attack at a particular umpire without strong evidence that he, personally, was being sexist. From what I've seen, he is unusually draconian as a judge, but I haven't seen sufficient basis to believe that he was harder on Williams than he would have been on a man in the same situation.

Since Williams's coach admitted he was coaching her, she was, in fact, cheating, since such coaching is against the rules. It upset her to be called out for cheating. Tough luck, you got caught for something most people get away with. But all she got was a warning for that -- no big deal. Then she melted down and busted up a racket. Fine, she's an impassioned player -- lots of players vent that way and get a warning, or if they're already operating under a warning, lose a point. But then she started insulting the umpire. What's he supposed to do at that point to restore order? You can argue he went too far, but it's far from clear that he did so due to sexism, so that's a pretty incendiary charge to lob his way.

Anyway, I thought Williams did a good job, belatedly, at seeing things through the eyes of her opponent and realizing how this whole thing had soured what ought to have been a sweet moment for her. Such empathy is commendable. Also, I don't understand the connection you're making to Kapernick. Kapernick isn't someone who cursed out a ref, slammed his helmet, and then made an incendiary claim based on having been penalized for cheating. He's someone who thought it would do good in the world to call attention to a serious issue of our time, and sacrificed his career in the process.
The Draconian ref is not consistent.

Ramos has also been accused of inconsistencies. At this year’s Wimbledon quarter-final between Novak Djokovic and Kei Nishikori both players threw their rackets to the ground in frustration. However, only Djokovic was issued a warning and directed a comment at the umpire during the game: “Double standards, my friend, double standards,” he told Ramos. After the match, Djokovic brought the subject up again with reporters. “I thought I didn’t harm the grass. I know how I threw the racket. [Nishikori] even threw the racket in the fourth set. [Ramos] said he didn’t see it it.”...

Although it is impossible to prove whether Ramos was being pedantic or sexist during Saturday’s final, it is true that he has never penalised a player a game in such a high-stakes match. For former US Open champion Billie Jean-King there is little doubt where the blame lay. “When a woman is emotional, she’s hysterical’ and she’s penalized for it. When a man does the same, he’s ‘outspoken’ and there are no repercussions,” she wrote on Twitter. “Thank you, Serena Williams, for calling out this double standard. More voices are needed to do the same.”

There needs to be consistency, you penalize all or penalize none.

The Kaep comparison in the OP was nonsensical. There is no comparison or connection whatsoever.

oh contrair ,

black athlete , black liberal athlete bringing politics into a professional sporting event, one crying racism, the other crying sexism.
and both blaming the controversy on someone else.

the connection to liberals in general is even more stark, violence from being triggered resulting in them breaking things,
breaking rules, claiming authority be damned because they are above it

Interesting. I was going to say that the only comparison was that they were black, but thought I'd be accused of racebaiting. But then your first qualifier is that it's because they're both black.

It wasn't political. She was just being a poor sport because she was losing.

Most of our great athletes have been pretty poor sports about that, because they're so competitive that they truly hate losing. But I thought it was a shame that she took that moment away from the eventual champion.

I saw a comment about it yesterday that was just perfect: Blackenroe

black "liberals" (qualifier)

and in my initial post I pointed out she stopped "just short" of using the race card, and probably because her husband is white.
But she was just about to throw that out there,
my original "point" is liberals have created this atmosphere that if something doesn't go their way there must be some underlying discrimination involved.
Kapernick because he was black, Serena because she is a woman. Never entertaining for a second that if Kapernick were white patriotic people that love this country and what the flag and anthem stand for would be equally in disagreement

And if a white tennis player had been caught getting coached from the stands maybe the umpire would have reacted the same way?
NOOOOOOOO, not possible in nut-bag world, right?

that you, as forum liberals didn't see my "point" is not surprising, blinders do that

Your just mad because she bumped Trump's weekend tweets to the back page, the Donald is probably having a breakdown cause nobody cares about his morning rants

Trump must be doing something right to have you lefties constantly up in arms.

Funny I have yet to read the first Trump tweet guess that burst your bubble that conservatives squander their time over Trump tweets.

I call bs

why are you so fucking stupid? you think I just pull this stuff out of my ass?

From 2009:
Serena Williams, who lost both her temper and her US Open semi-final against Kim Clijsters on Saturday, was last night fined $10,500 (£6,300) and faced with the possibility of suspension for her profanity-laced tirade against a lineswoman who called a foot fault against her.

..

Officials judged her conduct to have constituted "unsportsmanlike behaviour" and levied the maximum possible penalty. Williams, whose reward for making the semi-final was $350,000 (£209,954), was also fined an additional $500 (£300) for breaking her racket earlier in the controversial match.

Neither Williams nor Earley were prepared to reveal exactly what was said to the lineswoman but the New York tabloids, which splashed the story across the back pages yesterday morning, were not so reticent. Suffice to say, it was not exactly ladylike: "I swear to God I'll fucking take the ball and shove it down your fucking throat."

Well, there is their race, which was clearly on the mind of the original poster, who, a propos of nothing, brought up the "race card." Perhaps that explains the non sequitur.

shes a sore loser, always making poor excuses and whining when she is losing. terrible role model

She is, but it's not like that's too unusual w/ tennis stars (particularly American tennis stars). I think it's because most grow up in a pretty insular environment, and end up pretty spoiled and not used to dealing w/ adversity.

Connors, McEnroe, Nastase - for every Borg & Federer, it seems like there is one of those guys. They just hate to lose and throw infantile tantrums when they do. I still love them as players.

I do not agree with your assessment, if she was being a poor sport she would have allowed the crowd to continue booing Osaka, instead she asked them to stop booing and complimented her on her play.

I think she has a legitimate complaint about how some players players are not penalized for their behavior, but she was. I’ve seen male players do the same things she did and received no penalty.

She did act badly, but so do a lot of other players. There needs to be some consistency.

there absolutely is consistency. she was already passed two strikes by the time she got the final infraction. she was berating the ump non stop

plenty of hot heads, you are right. but they never pretended to be the victim or claim some conspiracy against them when they got infractions for their poor behavior. Serena thinks her shit doesn't stink

I'm open to the idea that he tends to penalize women more then men, but that'll take a statistical argument, not an anecdotal one. For example, if one could show that he takes away points at twice the rate for women as for men, with a large enough pool of data to make that statistically significant, he'd have some explaining to do. But with a single case, it could come down to factors having nothing to do with her being a woman. For example, perhaps she just pushed his buttons by demanding an apology from him when he warned her about cheating, when he was certain she'd been cheating (and it turns out she was cheating, according to the confession of her own coach). It's possible he's fairly laid back about some kinds of conduct, and not others, and that Williams's self-righteous routine rubbed him the wrong way, and that's what led to harsher treatment than normal for her subsequent bad behavior.

I consider "sexism," like "racism" to be very strong accusations when directed at an individual. So, I'm going to refrain from jumping on that one until there's a stronger argument than I've seen so far.

Yeah, that was funny -- I just posted something suggesting the connection for the original poster was that they were both black, and then I started feeling bad because that's a pretty serious charge to make without some airtight justification. But then I read a few comments down the thread and the original poster came right out and admitted it.

In her (sort of) defense, that makes her normal for an elite athlete. The top handful of athletes in highly competitive sports tend to be jerks, because the only way to rise to that level is not just to be physically gifted, but to hate losing with a passion that few people can even imagine, such that it drives insane levels of effort and focus, and a complete egomania. Ty Cobb, Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Barry Bonds, Tiger Woods, Mike Tyson, Lebron James, Lawrence Taylor, and so on. Elite athletes are nearly always terrible role models, if only because getting to that level in a highly competitive sport requires a single-minded focus on just one area of endeavor, and a great selfishness. People who put others first seldom excel to that extent.
