Subcontractors say they’re owed millions, face financial ruin, after helping build Obama Presidential Center

The Obama Presidential Center was billed as a lasting legacy to former President Barack Obama, and its construction was touted as an ambitious model built with aggressive goals for minority-owned and local businesses.

But now, some of the very subcontractors who helped build the 19.3-acre campus on Chicago’s South Side say they are facing financial ruin as they race to recover millions of dollars they claim remain unpaid ahead of the center's grand opening Friday. Overall construction costs were reported to be $830 million in 2021, and have likely climbed past the $1 billion mark.

Will the left slam Obama for not paying
Obama IS NOT the party who allegedly owes the money it's a foundation. Now, if this is true, and it's not been proven yet, these are ONLY ALLEGATIONS - these subcontractors can sue the foundations and get their $$.

Grok:

No, SO MAD, that argument is not fully appropriate or fair as a clean distinction that absolves Obama while uniquely condemning Trump.

It oversimplifies both situations, ignores standard industry practices, and applies inconsistent standards.

Here's a balanced breakdown:

Structural Similarities (Both Used GCs and Layers of Contractors)

  • Obama Center: The Foundation (owner) hired Lakeside Alliance (a joint venture GC/construction manager including Turner Construction and local firms) to handle hiring, management, and payment of subcontractors. The Foundation states it paid Lakeside in full per contract and has no direct relationship with subs. Disputes involve change orders, delays, and closeouts between Lakeside/subs—common in large, long-delayed projects.
  • Trump's projects: Trump/Trump Org typically acted as developer/owner and hired general contractors, project managers, or direct subs for hotels, casinos, towers, etc. Many disputes arose at the GC or sub level, with Trump entities often disputing bills over quality, delays, incomplete work, or renegotiating terms post-completion. USA Today (2016) documented dozens of lawsuits, liens, and complaints over decades where contractors claimed non- or under-payment.
In both cases, there are layers:

Owner/Developer → GC → Subs.

Direct "hiring and paying the people he stiffed" isn't always literal—Trump companies often worked through entities and managers too.

Real estate development was Trump's business, but large projects routinely use GCs.

Key Differences in Accountability and Patterns

  • Trump's record: More direct and repeated allegations across many projects (e.g., Taj Mahal casino with 253 subs affected; individual cases like painters, electricians, chandelier suppliers). It was aggressive negotiation over shoddy work/delays (a common developer tactic), and some suits settled or were disputed. Political opponents see a pattern of using leverage, bankruptcies, and legal delays to reduce payments based on the fact that Trump was the principal decision-maker/owner.
  • Obama Center: One high-profile nonprofit project with reported issues for a handful of subs (7–10+ mentioned, some seven-figure claims) amid massive overruns/delays. The Foundation distances itself via the GC structure.
The "hired a contractor" defense is standard—it applies to both.

Owners rarely directly manage/pay every sub; that's why GCs exist.

Blaming the top-level owner exclusively ignores how construction contracting works (fixed-price contracts, change order disputes, etc.).

If the GC was paid, the owner has fulfilled their primary obligation unless there's evidence of underfunding or interference.

Why the Argument Falls Short

  • Inconsistent standards: Defending Obama via "delegated to GC" while attacking Trump for similar delegation (or direct involvement as developer) is special pleading. Both can be criticized for oversight of projects that left subs hurting.
  • Scale and context: Trump's issues spanned decades and many projects because he was a real-estate developer; Obama Center is singular because Obama was not. Construction is dispute-prone—delays, changes, and payment fights are routine.
  • Blameless? Obama Foundation isn't "blameless" if they chose/oversaw a GC with issues, pushed aggressive timelines/goals (e.g., diversity targets amid complexity), or if communication broke down. Trump's GCs aren't uniquely villainous for industry-typical hardball tactics.
A more accurate take:

Both cases highlight risks in large construction—owners/developers benefit from leverage and layers, while smaller subs often absorb hits from disputes.

Trump's longer track record invites more criticism as a longtime investor in the industry. Obama's situation fits typical nonprofit/government-adjacent project frictions.

Equating or fully contrasting them for partisan "gotcha" purposes distorts the shared realities of how these projects operate.

So the answer is "no". Right? You never said anything so reasonable about any of the Trump construction imbroglios, did you?
So Grok agrees with Nomad.

You cult members are so delusional you will believe anything. Illinois allows anyone not paid to file a lien against the project.

Read the story and it isn't about not getting paid. It's about companies losing money when working on the project. "Among them is Adamson Plumbing, whose owner Mike Owen says is nearly $4 million in the red after years of work on the project." The one claims it's because of change orders that he lost money. Any competent contractor doesn't lose money on change orders since change orders are a change from the original bid so they are not covered under the original bid but are usually time and materials.

MUST PROTECT THE KING

Obama will be okay and appreciates your prayers to him.

Reading the story and finding other stuff online shows it's mostly bullshit. Contractors don't get fully paid until all inspections are done and all punch lists are complete. The GC is still working through all that so not paid in full.

Then Obama should be all up in that contractor's ass about paying the subs. After all, he hired the contractor to do a job and the contractor didn't do it. He hired subs and stiffed them. That comes back on Obama.
That isn't what the story is about. Typical Fox. They make a huge headline and then hide the truth way down in the story. Fox didn't verify the facts but did the story anyway. The actual story is the companies lost money on the project. Not that they were not paid for the work done.

Fox News Digital was unable to independently verify the company's claimed losses. Shareef said the owner told him the same story but the owner wouldn’t provide Shareef with documents due to the NDA.

Ah, lying in backquotes. Too stupid to debate, you have to cheat - little worm that you are - Noballs.

😆😂😆🤣☝🏼 Too stupid to understand that I stopped wasting my time trying to debate sleazeball liars and obfuscators like you long ago.

All you MAGAholes want to do is engage in stupid, childish little word games, so I'm just going to have fun pissing on you.

Fuck off. 🖕🏼

Imagine if you (your handlers in the hive) applied the same rules and standards that you use against Trump to this? Then you would be demanding that your King be executed.

But you democrat socialists, you of the NSDAP, have twice as many standards as we Americans have. Your double standards prove how superior you are, Sieg Heil.

Another day where TA doesn't bother to actual read the articles he is commenting on.
No one on this forum posts articles that actually disprove his position more than @T. A. Gardner does.

I cannot discern if he legit has reading comprehension issues and actually thinks the articles support what he is claiming, when they do not, or if he is just doing it dishonestly hoping no one reads the articles??

The 'dumb' or 'negligence' question is real?

You get your ignorant, lying ass handed to you every single time, Noballs.

This is no exception.

These MAGA idiots have never had a real job in their lives so they don't understand the basic rules of business.

Nothing funnier than a perennial loser like you or your girlfriend Donnagenes marching around with your little A-cup titties pointed straight up, boasting about your imaginary prowess on the message boards.

I see you are trying to protect Trump by attacking Obama. Cult members will do what they have to do protect King Trump.

How would noting that the Obama foundation - led by Barack and Michelle, have failed to pay sub-contractors, "protect Trump"

You've gotten stupid with your Peewee Herman "I know you are but what am I" routine.

You know, cunt, that the dispute is between contractors and subcontractors. Nothing to do with Obama.

Lying piece of MAGAT shit.
